Never saw an actual game and never knew the rules of it, but from what I got from american movies and shit, the quarterback was some kind of God. A guy that being 14 can already do whatever he wants in life, he's over everyone else. Is the creator, the genius of that sport, the guy who wins tournaments.
Since I started reading about handegg here, I've realized that things are a bit different, he's a god, that's right, but I can not understand what he does.

they are told what to do, but if you see the defence lining upto completely stop you they have to change the play on the fly, so they do have to use their brains.

like other anons said, the qb can change the play at the line of scrimmage depending on how the defense is lined up, but even when he runs the play that the coach picked, he still has the responsibility to make quick decisions on what to do with the ball based on how the defense moves as the play progresses.

Because if a playmaker in football makes a bad pass it most often results in losing possession for 20 seconds. When a quarterback makes a bad pass it often results in losing the opportunity to score which is a big deal since in some play off games you can only get as few as 10 chances to score.
Plus NFL defenses are much more complex than football defences

I'd say there's a lower skill ceiling though.
Take running back for instance. Adrian Peterson is so above and beyond everyone else in the league right now it's ridiculous. When someone compliments a running back, there's just an implied "but he's still not as good as AP", they don't even have to say it.
A REALLY good running back only comes into the NFL once every decade or so. I'd argue for that reason, it's probably the hardest position to play.
