Hi, newcomers to /cric/! It seems you have stumbled upon our nifty old sport.
You're probably wondering: what the hell are these guys in whites doing? Why are they playing with a paddle? Is this a new meme? But did you know that cricket has been played for over 200 years? Wow! That's really something. Here's something that might help you understand the game more:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laws_for_Big_Strong_Americans

And while you're here, it's best if we introduce you to some of /cric/'s finest memes so you don't feel left out :) Here are a few of the classics:

>Is David Warner related to Shane Warner?
Referring to 2 famous Australian cricketers, this is a humorous play on words of current Australian batsman David Warner and Australian spin legend Shane Warne (spin is a form of bowling that you'll come to know and love).
The similar personalities of the two players also makes this amusing, as it's likely that they are probably related!

>Will Smith score a century?
Another delightful play on words. Here we're referring to current Australian captain Steven Smith, and the question is whether he'll score a century. However, this question is always answered with "Will Smith is an actor m8", a reference to popular African-American actor Will Smith, someone I'm sure you're familiar with!

>Daniel
Daniel is a cricket fan from New Zealand well known for his idiosyncrasies, such as his worship of progressive rock, the English County Championship and infatuation with average Slavic girls (surely a step down from the babes you have in Europe or America, haha).
It is common to reply to New Zealander posts with "hi daniel", as a reference to /cric/'s most popular Kiwi.

>Holly or Ellyse?
This is an ongoing debate as to who is the better looking female cricketer: Australia's Holly Ferling and Ellyse Perry (who represents Australia in both cricket and soccer - wow!)

There's so much more in /cric/ to offer! Stick around!
>>

kek, not even him, but your an even bigger freshcunt if you didn't know au/sp/ moves from gimmick to gimmick extremly fast. in this case, pro-ironic pandering to neg-bsa shitposting, not that this is much of a gimmick.

The real freshcunts are the shitfags that cling to the memes of the previous weeks as if they were relevant in any way instead of creating and pioneering new ones. Poo peeland is literally the biggest example of this, trying to turn daniel into their own zeronoose and just replying in memes that they don't truly understand

It's pretty obvious that guy is a newfag since we never had Indian posters in 2012 and I don't think even in 2013, or maybe we had 1.

After 3 years of research and intensive investigation, I finally finished the ultimate meme. His name is Captain Rubber Smothie. It's ridiculously amazing and has all kinds of epic injokes. Only I can post this meme because I am the best memer in the world. I am the best. No one is better than me, because, as previously stated, I am the best in the world at meming. I know I'm being modest, so I should say this meme was easy to make, because, as stated, I'm the best there is. This meme is perfect, hands down. Anyone who says it isn't perfect will have their comment deleted, blocked from my account, blocked from 4chan, computer destroyed with a hammer, and you will be killed by my millions of fans at the snap of my fingers, because I can demand that much respect, because I'm the best. Hope you enjoy my meme. His name is Captain Rubber Smothie.

It was 11:30pm. Late enough that the dual sheperds of television and alcohol had laid to sleep their flock of sheeple, and thus, I was psychically free. I had been adding additional Dawkinsian citations to my dissertical treatise on Atheism when I felt two itches: The first, like a burst of lucidity in a world run by fundies was a stricken message from my forehead. I removed my black velvet brimmed hat and upon the silver silk lining lay a darkened ring of sweat. Thoughtfully scratching my third eye, I considered the effort it would take to remove from these plebian minds their destructive beliefs. And my thoughts darkened with the knowledge of what the road ahead bade.

The second itch, it spoke from my lungs and I understood it's language only too well. It's Kanji, inpenetrable to most, was the unmistakable urge. With an unnatural fluentcy I grabbed my piece and placed it to my lips like some modern seppuku practitioner. As I inhaled the the bitter-sweet essence of mangosteen, the voice subbsided, my eyes focused on the reflected, stubbly chin the through Calligra Words glare and I realised, with clarity, that they were afraid. The blue LED on my piece waned as I exhaled; as if aware of mortality and the absence of an afterlife. I smiled and Richard's visage from the dust jacket stared knowingly at me. I placed my hands upon the visceral CherryMx keys, knowing that rest was not on the path to reforming this planet. And the morning offered new insights into genius.

Alright cunts, I just saw that decision and I'm ready to let off some steam.

Is S "Umpire's Call" Ravi the worst umpire on the 'Elite Panel'? I've seen double amputees give more decisions than this useless cunt. And I hope Nigel Llong uses his Man of the Series cheque in investing in a guide dog. Despite all the discussion regarding HotSpot(where there was a clear spot), it's clear just from the replay that there's enough indication that he hit it. Look at the seam of the ball in the slow-mo replay, it changes a fair bit after passing his bat, plus there's a visible deviation through the air. The fact that Lyon actually started walking says it all really. And I couldn't believe Llong dismissing the Hotspot as saying "it could have come from anywhere" despite the DRS tools pretty much existing on the basis of circumstantial evidence. Where else could it have come from? It wasn't a flash of heat, and there was no other contact with Lyon's bat and any other surface.

No complaints about Lyon, he has the right to stand his ground and even had the decency to walk. He's done nothing wrong. I haven't seen the rest of yesterday, but I don't think this decision has any effect on the apparently shambolic batting from New Zealand. But fuck me if it didn't play a massive part in bringing Australia back into the game. That partnership could define the game. But you won't hear any complaints from Captain Diplomat, who's probably giving Nigel Llong a foot rub and inviting him over to fuck his wife right now, because politeness is more important than honesty.

Absolute fucking farce.

only a small part of the problem

wickets are getting flatter every year.

Grounds (outside Australia) are manlet-tier

The Kookaburra and Dukes balls both seem to be getting worse every year as well

Oh and the general standard of fast bowling is dropping for all the aforementioned reasons. Australia and South Africa are the only two countries with acceptable standards of pace bowling. Pakistan might, it'll be interesting to see how they go when they play outside of Asia next year.

>>
is this the designated /nrl/ thread?
>>
>>63865087
>I personally think the standard of spin bowling has dropped further than pace bowling

It has but that's only because we just exited a golden age of spin bowling so it isn't fair to compare. if anything spin bowling has just gone back to the norm with a couple of really good spinners (Shah, Ashwin) and then a whole crop of average spinners behind them.

10 years ago you had Warne, Murali, Kumble & MacGill. There's literally never been anything comparable to that in the history of cricket. the 2000's was for spin bowling what the 80's was for fast bowling.
>>
>>63865219

oh and then ofcourse there were guys like prime Harbhajan & Saqlain just behind them

>>
>>63865219
Death bouncer era when?
>>
>>63865132
The other issue I have is I don't think australian captains really know how to bowl their spinners for maximum effect. Its why I'm glad they didn't pick SOK because smith would have split their time and they both would have had 10 overs each whilst starc and Hazelwood would have had 18 each. I think the australian mentality especially needs to change, from knock em over with my quicks and use my spinner whilst they recover to using the spinner in an attacking way and giving them a lot of overs.

People mocked Lyon when he couldn't knock the saffers over a few years ago, yet up until tht point he virtually was a defensive bowler tying down ends. Its the same when he goes on the sub continent. Australia will still pick 3 quicks and wonder why they can't build pressure on roads and then "blame" lyon for not bowling a team out.

So I think in australais case especially, its the captains from domestic upwards that don't use the spinners effectivly to further develop them

>>
>>63864944

There used to be a story about Barry Richards being so bored during a match that he intentionally kept hitting the ball with the edge of the bat, and still hit everything for four.

When you look at the size of his bat back then that's just incredible.

>>63865310

kek, apart from Warne and MacGill your Shield spinners were spuds like McGain and Krezja. Stop deluding yourself.

Only a one-eyed idiot would put Vettori among the greats but he developed into arguably one of the top 3 spinners in the world between 2008-11. If he didn't play on objectively the worst pitches in the world for spin, and if he didn't have to single-handedly carry the team for years his average would be at least a couple of runs lower.

To add to the discussion regarding spinner qualities, I think T20 has a major role to play in the declining quality of spinners. You see so many spinners these days just firing in darts or giving the ball way too much flight because that's how you're required to bowl in T20 these days, and it's far easier to get a gig in T20 as a spinner than it is in domestic cricket. It's why you have guys like that 42 year old in the IPL who has never played a FC game of cricket.

>>
>>63866202

it was a bad decision by Ravi (who is a fucking awful umpire anyway) but the entire point of the DRS is to remove the howler

Instead the DRS reaffirmed the howler

There's two reasons for this. 1) Nigel Llong is an incompetent moron. 2) The 3rd umpire has a mindset of going into furious damage control of trying to defend the onfield umpires decision no matter what.

I have said all along (check my >leddit account for proofs) that the DRS system should be used to find the correct decision irrespective of what the on-field umpire originally said. With the current system the 3rd ump actively looks for reasons to ignore evidence from the DRS and try and support the onfield umpire.

THIS is the reason India does not use the DRS (look at the recent comments by Ashwin, Kohli last year etc) and I can understand why. In order to fix the DRS they need to change the way it is used AND hire specialist 3rd umpires. Using regular umpires as 3rd umps with the current system is unacceptable because 1) they have a clear conflict of interest and 2) they aren't necessarily the best people for the job. Being a 3rd ump requires a completely different skillset to an onfield ump. Nigel Llong (who is a decent umpire normally) is a clear example of this.

>I think the umpire's call meme is actually justified to a certain extent

I agree but NOT to the extent that it warrants more than 50% of the ball needing to hit the stumps

Lets take David Warner at Perth. THAT was a howler. It looked out live. It looked out on the replay. Eagle Eye had the ball crashing into the bails but it was not out because of 50% meme.

But obviously Eagle Eye isn't perfect because it relies on projection. I would reduce the margin to 10%. That way the Warner-esque decisions are still given out but the ones that just flick the edge of the stumps and could be down to the margin of error still go to umps call.

Pic related happened during the CWC during one of the Sri Lanka pool ames. Give me a good reason this should not be given out.
>>
>>63866537
No, the captains know that it needs to be more than just a maybe. If they get them back on umps call, then you'll probabably see 6-7 of them every 80 overs adding 30 minutes of delays into the game237
>>
>>63866533
he won't though
>>
>>63866567

What pisses me off the most is the assumption that you need more than 50% of the ball hitting the stumps to be out. That's ridiculous. In reality, even 20% of the ball hitting the stumps is usually enough to dislodge the bails. I'm not an expert on Hawkeye but if that's what the percentage is referring to then it's just absurd.

That whole Sri Lankan tour was a shocker in terms of DRS. There was one game where Hawkeye couldn't be used because le glasses man was too far down the pitch, and in another it couldn't be used for a review because one of the cameras wasn't working for the time. Which is a fair enough excuse, but in that case DRS should have been suspended for the whole game which it wasn't.
>>
>>63866561
25% is less than a 2cm margin of error and frankly thats not a howler

Warner at Perth looked more than a maybe, it looked plumb as fuck. Should the captains really be penalized for umpire's call decisions like that? Drinks breaks delay the game more often than any review does.

No, it's just a reasonable allowance for the inaccuracies of hawkeye. Too much though IMO

As I said, it all goes back to the mentality of furiously trying to defend the onfield decision no matter what

>There was one game where Hawkeye couldn't be used because le glasses man was too far down the pitch, and in another it couldn't be used for a review because one of the cameras wasn't working for the time. Which is a fair enough excuse, but in that case DRS should have been suspended for the whole game which it wasn't.

This is a separate issue. Only games played in England & Australia have ALL the DRS toys. It's a financial problem because DRS is paid for by the host commentators (ie Channel 9 in AUS, Sky in England etc). it needs to be centralised by the ICC.

At the moment games in Windies, Sri Lanka etc usually don't have hotspot at all, not even the shitty cheap hotspot cameras (there are two-tiers of hotspot cameras, the good ones are only used in AUS/ENG).

The percentage of the ball hitting the stumps is just a margin of error because hawkeye isn't perfect. It is really just an advanced guess at where the ball was going, so 50% of the ball hitting the bails could in reality have been a complete miss

Okay here's how to fix it

>remove umpires call for hitting in line. It's either in or out
>make the umpire's call region for projection at least half as big, therefore decisions aren't referred back to the umpire so much

It seems 99% of these are umpire's call nowadays, it should be far less.

This. Tendulkar had a point when he said he'd only accept DRS if it was standardized.

That's a huge problem in cricket. Nothing is kept the same across countries. Balls are required to be the same measurements but not bats, different balls are used in different countries, there's no regulation on the size of a ground(which is stupid imo - I don't care about the personal charms of a ground, I just want fairness across all cricket venues) and DRS tools are different as well. There's so much broken shit in the game right now.
