The libero's spot in the rotation doesn't serve and does not require the player to leave the court. This allows you to shorten the serve rotation and increase reps for your best servers.

They skip the libero in the serve rotation.
The best analogy I can think of is that they are sort of the reverse of a designated hitter in baseball.

it would be forcing everyone in basketball to play point guard, and have them rotate between each other. The libero would be like a big defensive center that is allowed to not have to play point guard at all, and can stay under the rim and defend.

liberos are manlets that have great reactions, agility and technique but no height and power. at top level you need hard jump serves to put pressure on the other team. just lobbing it past the net gets you killed.

Shortening the rotation allows more reps for the most talented servers on the team. If baseball teams could shorten the batting order by one, they would. As someone else said, the reverse-DH. Eliminating a defensive position from batting is an incredible advantage.

Libero is just a defensive specialist that can be subbed in whenever (doesn't count against your 16 or whatever subs per set) but only in the back row. Depending on whether you run a 5-1 or 6-2, they may or may not also be one of your best passers.
For most of the season Michigan used Tiffany Morales, a U.S. Olympic/beach volleyball player, as the libero, but the coach didn't think she was good enough at passing plus she declared that she was going to graduate and transfer to a school (probably closer to her hometown Redondo, CA) where she could play beach volleyball for her 5th season of eligibility, so the coach tried a couple of different liberos that were better at passing (but not as good at digs). Thankfully, this freshman had a monster game with a ton of digs, so she should be the regular next year.
