I would say only your College rivalries are genuine, there needs to be something deeper than just "our team is in the same division so it's a rivalry!!".
For instance take the West Ham and Millwall rivalry, the clubs both started from competing shipbuilding companies on the thames about a mile apart, not only were they rivals on the field but they were rivals in everything they did, they were taking the food out of each others mouth, one time there was a workers strike and the Millwall dockers plotted against it, broke the strike and stole a ton of work and fucked all the other dockers over, the hatred has only grown over the last 100 years.

The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry has been going on for about a century now. It started when the Yankees bought Ruth (kind of like the Pele of baseball) from the Red Sox and went on to win the World Series 26 times over the next 81 years while the Red Sox failed time and time again. There's also a geographical/cultural rivalry between Boston and New York because Boston is eternally in New York's shadow just like the Red Sox are eternally in the Yankees' shadow.
