I seen both play. Cannavaro was an elite defender yes, but Puyol was a monster because not only he was a prime defender too, but also he was a field marshall, a lider and he could play anywhere in the defense in case of emergency (year playing RB and a CL final playing LB).
Also, Cannavaro wasn't even the best italian defender when he was on his prime.
