What's next for Ronda?
>>
>>63620529
i'll tell you why.

had holly holms found herself on the ground for more than 15 seconds, she would be in a world of shit with ronda.

i know everyone here thinks ronda is "shit" but lets be honest, we all know why holly trained specifically in takedown defense and spacing for this fight. we all know that if ronda was smarter and had a better gameplan this fight would have been completely different.

not to take anything from Holm, because that chick is amazing, but she wasn't fucking with ronda on the ground.

She tried to though. At least 4 times in the first round. Every time, Holm countered brilliantly. Only once Ronda got her down, and Holm was already halfway out by the time Ronda did that slick climb to armbar (I love those). She even tried her famously deadly knees and Holm just responded with two of her own.

There was one interesting moment where Ronda had Holm against the cage, and she went for a sorta wrestling style outside leg vining which Holm dealt with easily. That moment stood out to me because I recall seeing Akiyama in that exact same position use a crazy cool inside leg reap instead which worked great and ended in a takedown that went away from the fence... it would have been interesting to see Ronda try that.

not that guy, but ill answer for him.

plain and simple, ronda really didn't take holm seriously, and that cost her. Holm, on the other hand, took into account all of rousey's tricks, studied and did her homework, and knew exactly how to defend every single (albeit only 2) attempts to take her down. she literally didn't make the same mistakes all these other chicks ronda fought made, and it flustered her badly.

in any event, I think if ronda does decides to come back for a rematch, holly holm will be prepared, but ronda will have to brush up on some more of her judo skills AND learn how not to walk into a left jab whilst trying to get close.

tl;dr ronda didn't realize someone might pick up on judo throw defense.

I've always felt that in Men's Mixed Martial Arts, Judo provided an excellent defensive base, but was tricky to apply offensively in a no-gi environment which limits a lot of entries and finishes. Maybe the additional friction of women's MMA tops assists in getting that Judo going? Either way, Holm masterfully kept Rousey away from her hips (except that one time lol).

I liked this exchange in particular.

you see plenty of judo in mens divisions

just most guys arent learning it in a judo hall now, they are learing it as an organic part of mma.

hip tosses, arm drags, foot sweeps, reaps.

honestly eventually MMA really is going to (if it isnt already) get to a point where there really isn't "styles" that people are mixing and matching, it will all just be organic parts of the same game.

Think about how many techniques not that many years ago people were insisting were "bullshit" and are now being used very successfully

MMA was the best thing to happen to traditional martial arts, because what its proving as time goes on is its not so much about techniques but how the person trains. I was around, and I was one of the people saying dumb shit like "karate doesn't work" and then machida popped onto the scene fighting almost exactly the same way he did in his point competition days.

UKbro pretty much always beats me to the webm, he's probably the guy you want to ask haha

Anyway, my general setup is
>start ripping the m3u8 of the ufc.tv stream with livestreamer
>play the ripped file in mpv and enjoy the banging
>use the good ol' ffmpeg cli to make webms out of parts i like

So no screen recording currently
My main issue currently is that the ufc.tv stream parameters are really unusual. There's very few I-frames, so if you don't use the slow accurate seek you can really miss the mark when trying to make a webm from a specific start point.

Holly had some outstanding takedown defense and ground defense. Is she still fighting out of Jackson's camp? I believe it.

I'm glad to see Ronda lose, for the sake of women's MMA. This will shake things up appropriately.

Given her Judo and BJJ, I knew Ronda's greatest challenge was going to be someone with superior standup.

Well a lot of that gets taught in some of the other disciplines. I'll admit I don't know much of anything about Judo so I'm probably wrong.

I guess I was more referring to there not being many men who came from a Judo background. All the champs I can think of came from wrestling or BJJ.

this is what I think a lot of people dont understand about what it means to have truly good "striking" and why every time joe rogaine talks about honda's "elite striking" anybody who has been a boxer or a kickboxer is doing pic related

being able to string more than one punch together is not good striking. To be truly competent at striking is about the less visceral things going: distance, timing, angles and defensive movement

Any dickhead with a bit of training can throw one punch after another, its another thing entirely to LAND one punch after another, and do it while remaining safe.

Ronda got exposed by someone who can actually strike.

Judo throw is just as appropriate as saying "punch" rather than specifying hook/cross/jab.

>>63621850
I think you sort of answered your own question. It's not good for a weight class to be dominated by a single person. Ronda's dominance wasn't highlighting her excellence so much as it was a demonstration of the lack of skilled opponents.

That's the biggest thing to me about the fight. The ringcraft of Holm allowing her to capitalize on Ronda's linear tendencies. She also turned Rousey around so much, it was like TJ vs Barao except instead of sticking to her opponent Holm cut a nice exit angle, reset, and let Ronda charge forward again.

Jesus christ, I'm not saying it was beautiful but Correia's gameplan was to win via dirty boxing and striking.

Ronda fucking beat her at her own game and we know that her striking was always weak. I'm only saying that she could scrap with her competition until they put a god-tier striker in there with the right gameplan.

Exactly. When Rogan said she was pound for pound the best fighter, I just lost a shitload of what little respect I had for his analysis.

Is her ground game leagues above her competition? Sure. That's what training since childhood gets you.

Was she a well-rounded fighter? I think this recent fight answers that.

It just sucks to hear that stated when there are some incredible athletes from the men's division who don't get the recognition because they don't make good magazine covers.

The thing is, is that Holly Holm looked better than she ever has before. She actually fought better than any woman ever has before in a UFC fight. The power she was generating, and the precision, is something we have not seen before in any previous female fight in the UFC.

It's good for their evolution as elite fighters rather than their marketability as commercial stars. Women evolving their techniques and how they approach MMA as an art is more important than having a champion that looks nice, stars in super hero movies, and sells phones on TV.

Having an elite striker/boxer/kickboxer as champion for once is going to make the women in her division learn the hallmark techniques men have had to understand to survive in the sport since its beginning. In order to challenge Holm they will have to learn proper striking, footwork, cage cutting, patience, and overall decision making. Learning some bare essentials should also prop WMMA into more respectable territory. You see, WMMA isn't considered unequal to the men's half of the sport because the women's best could never hope to be on the same level as the men's best. Rather, it's considered unequal because women have never had to learn anywhere near the same level of fighting ability to compete within their own half of the sport. See what I mean? A male champion would need all the tools to stay afloat in his division. But here we had a long time women's champion who got by being great at one thing and one thing alone: grappling. Believe me, this is better for WMMA and I welcome it.

I miss Georges...

Do you think UFC 200 will compare to 100?

Let's be honest senpai.

Henderson vs. Bisping spawned a thousand memes.

GSP defended his title and defeated a guy who was beating every ass ala Koscheck, Hughes, and Parisyan in Thiago Avles, the Pitbull, that looked really dangerous.

Then Brock Lesnar delivered the best post fight rant in UFC history after pulling what looked like "When Bears Attack" on Frank Mir.

Sexyama fought. Fitch fought. The undercard was pretty stellar.

I know we're six events off, but I just don't see how 100 can be topped.

>I do think we should be clear that ronda is pretty fucking good at the things she's good at, though, for what it's worth.
Oh, without a doubt. She's a world class judoka. Her grappling ability is remarkable. That's just one facet of the sport though and I think Holly Holm just proved to WMMA at large that even if you're Ronda Rousey, you have to learn to adapt to stay champion for a long time. I think with Rousey, WMMA just had their Royce Gracie. This one person just storms in and starts throwing around this style that nobody is very sure how to deal with and lights everyone up for a while, but if that's the only egg in your basket, people are going to learn how to combat that after a while. The men adapted to Gracie's BJJ and now every man in the sport does it.

>>63622914
>Why?
You'll find your answer in the next paragraph
>The flyweight division has a champ that is super technical and no one gives a shit.
I do. I get excited for DJ's fights because he's a technical master. He's thrilling to watch if you can stand a technical match that doesn't always end in a KO.

As for Ronda Rousey, I think this loss might actually be better for her as a mixed martial artist in the long run. If she decides to stay in the sport for a while longer that fight might fuel her to find a camp that can truly teach her striking techniques. Being surrounded by yes-men all the time wasn't good for her. It was certainly a bad sign when her coach sat her down and lied to her for her own ego and told her she did great, when he should have told her the harsh truth that she just got lit up for a round. Maybe she learns from someone who might actually be a proper instructor. I'd love to see how she looks with some improvement in that department.

I think people want Rousey to be so much more than she is. We live in a world where women get sadly few role models, especially in athletic competition. You could see her elbow tucked in as she took Ronda down right? Well, she put that arm around Ronda's waste as she went to take Ronda down if we're talking about the same moment so Ronda ended up on top via turning her hips then went for the climbing arm bar which Holm escaped when Ronda let go of the arm with one of her hands to reposition herself to get the arm bar in.

Do you think, based on how they fell (regardless of whether Ronda or Holly should get credit for the take down), Ronda had any hope of a RNC, Armbar, or dominant ground position (guard/half/side/mount)?
Also, did Holly wrapping her arm around Ronda as they fell help Holly in any way?

It's why even though Holly did the sweep Ronda looked like she was going to get dominate position which she then used to lock in the same arm bar she did against Zingano except this time when she was still trying to get into position Holm just pulled out of it.

The two biggest moments when it comes to grappling were when they were against the fence and Holm pulled her elbow in and spun off the cage as Ronda couldn't do anything about it due to the cage and when Ronda almost got the arm bar.

>Condit beats Lawler by pointfighting
Diaz has some of the worst foot work you'll ever see, Lawler does not.

I'm just trying to imagine what would have happened if Holly hadn't wrapped her arm around Ronda as they fell.

So, I guess if Holly kept her elbow tucked she probably would have been able to stand up more immediately (i.e. not having to defend an armbar or another major threat)?

Is this guy legitimately retarded?

>Despite Rousey's busted lip and nose at the end of the opening round, and the head kick heard around the world moments later in the second round, Edmond is not convinced that Holm was the better striker in the fight.

Yes. And yet, I am not 100% convinced that Ronda is gonna find a different camp.
