But the reality is this. The Channel 10 contract expires in 2018. Let's say hypothetically CA decide to expand the comp by one team (big hypothetical because they've publicly said they won't be expanding). Now who do they award the franchise to? it sure as fuck aint ChristChurch. For a plethora of reasons
1) facilities: James Sutherland was on ABC yesterday and literally said the WACA isn't viable anymore because it only holds 20k people. Hagley Oval only holds 20k and that's with "temporary seating".
2) population. There simply isn't enough people to buy merch, attend games etc. Tasmanians are obsessed with AFL, always have been and it's the no1 sport their. But Lelbourne won't let them have a team and would rather keep flogging their shit franchises into NSW & QLD who don't care about bogan jump. Population matters.
3) TV audience. Channel 10 pay for the BBL and they have no access to the NZ TV market (I guess the rights would be sold to Sky or something). All Channel 10 would gain from having an NZ team is extra matches to air, but they'd get that from literally any team. My feeling is Channel 10 would veto any NZ team.
