Hire a manager who led the club to an unexpected title challenge, then gave him a chance to turn things around rather than just firing him in a kneejerk reaction. When things didn't improve, they went out and got a much better manager.

These guys aren't experts, they have to trust the people working for them to make those kind of decisions. And the money hasn't exactly been wasted. They've bought some decent players over the last few years: Suarez, Coutinho, Sturridge, Henderson, Sakho, etc. . Plus, they're paying to expand Anfield out of their own pockets rather than take money out of the club to do it, the way that Arsenal and Tottenham's owners are doing.
