Shown on the right, as a first team regular for Man City at age 18; and on the left in a Kebab house at the age of 27 having been out of football for 3 years

Michael Johnson
Nedum Onouha
Kasper Schmeichal

And worst of all Ched Evans

At least Daniel Sturridge turned out ok... I guess.

But Messi and Ronaldo we're respectively schooling teams at a young age, granted however it wasn't on the world stage. My problem with football before the 60's is that it was more Physical than it was technical which really makes it hard to judge if a player was good or not. A big example is the major power gaps between teams even on the international level. Sweden made it into the finals for Christs sake.

Not a single good goal in there, even shit Van Nistelrooy made prettier goals than that. The last one with the dribble shows Pele's mediocre ball control with the ball bouncing off his feet while dribbling and the terribly shit "defending" of the opponents. How is that good football, that clip just proves my point how totally fucking shit it was.

>>57848200

Your friend >>57848118 is right. Talk about Ronaldo, the true GOAT, not overrated as fuck Pele. Ronaldo had ten thousand times the skill of overrated Pele. I don't take any player or team seriously that played before 1974.

Pretty much this. The quality of the sports now would make many players from older generations horrible. It's like saying Paulino Alcántara would've been a world cup winner if he played 10 year's later (or if they even played world cup for that matter). Times change and you have to change with them.

>>
>>57848671
Oh alright my mistake too sorry. I should have realized what you meant so sorry about that. I don't really get insulted when people on /sp/ bring my country Canada into the equation if I'm being honest. I just love the sport and no amount of /sp/ shitposting against me will ever change that.
>>57848699
But after the late 1960's, a lot of money was put into the sport and the game took a sharp turn from physical to technical. We had tactics like Total football and extremely technical players like Cruyff and Maradona.
>>
>>57848521

The game changed forever in 1974, but to be fair, it has evolved so much since that year. Physically, technically and tactically it's a completely different game. Even the teams of the 90ties would get wrecked by today's teams so let's make it 2008 then, OK? The football that Bayern, Madrid and Barca have shown the last decade has been mind blowing.
>>
>>57848699

some athletes transcend time

in a sport like soccer/football certain things stand the test of time, the cross bar challenge and shit like that

https://youtu.be/0-Qgh-hjcDw

those are things that stand the test of time
>>
>>57848699
but you said you don't take them SERIOUS. that's just wrong, imo.

for example, messi is easily the best player of our generation but of all time? we don't know that.
>>
>>57848912

Considering the fact that football has never been as good as it is played today, yes, Messi is the best of all time. I don't even question it, it's self-evident.

>football has never been as good as it is played today

This is delusional. We have less great individualities than in the 90s. This was a time where incredible players like Bergkamp, Suker or Michael Laudrup were far from being considered the best... where Zidane won the Ballon d'Or only once, and Cantona wasn't even playing for his national team...! And what do we have now, besides Messi and Ronaldo? Müller? Ribéry? Di Maria? Falcao? All average and classless compared to the good players of 1998 no one really rated (say, Ryan Giggs or Gheorghe Hagi).

Also, if football is so much better today, how come old men like Totti or Drogba are still very competitive in it, and still play in major clubs? These men were in their prime 15 years ago when football was so inferior, but they're doing good, despite their old age, in a superior version of the game? I'm afraid it makes no sense.

Bramble wasn't that bad. He was perfectly competent for months on end. He just had a series ADD-inflicted fuck ups.

Honestly, its because its harder now.
Cantona would be seen as a liability and never get off the bench. Socrates wouldn't even get signed because he'd get marked out of every game. Socrates actually wrote a book about it, explaining that for football to be the way it was in the 70s, you'd need to either make the pitch far bigger or play with 7-8 players per side. Fitness levels have improved that much.
George Best would be pushed off the ball by every defender in the league.

Holy fucking shit, I remember telling some girl I had a crush on that he would be the next GOAT of world football.

Quote from his wiki; ""That goal was no accident." "It showed there was something magical about him. I felt ill when Zidane retired. Watching Gourcuff has cured me. When I see players like him, I feel like a small boy again"

he had probably one of the top 5 rookie qb seasons
as much as he deserves blame for shilling himself out instead of working on being a better player, and for not learning how to slide (lol), the redskins organization does too, putting so much on him from the get go
