Why did deploying a libero between backline and goalkeeper die out? It's legitimately a good strategy, if the libero is very fast and a good reader of the game. Is it the hightened use of the flanks in modern footballs "fault"? Would love seeing this being used with good results again

kimmich played in this role yesterday

it didn't, I think the role just developed with zonal marking
in fact most contemporary liberi are disguised or labelled as technically gifted centrebacks who have both the task to start the manoeuvre and the duty to play in line with other defenders

It was useful when teams were man marking all over the pitch.

Nowadays, it got replaced by ball playing CBs like Pique or Boateng or DMs who sometimes drop deep between the CBs when in possession like Busquets.

The classic libero is only useful in a 3/5 man defence against a 2 striker line up with 2 CBs man marking and the libero in a free sweeping role. 4 man defences almost killed the position because in a 2 CB setup, giving one of the CB a licence to attack leaves huge gaps in the centre of the field (just 1 CB responsible for the entire middle of the pitch)

My interpretation of the entire thing is that liberos died out when zonal marking became the standard.

Previously you'd have 3 man-marking CBs and one "free" defender who would help out wherever he was needed, but would move into the midfield and structure the buildup-play when in possession of the ball.

But with zonal marking, a 4-man-line is capable of fulfilling the same defensive duties, while still having the FBs as attacking outlets. Additionally the buildup-role of the libero has been taken over by ball-playing CBs and defensive midfielders that drop between the CBs to play passes forward. Goalkeepers have also gotten better with the ball at their feet, are available as a passing target for the CBs and come off their line more often.

The libero has been effectively made redundant by tactical innovation.

Offside trap killed it for obvious reasons.

bc of the offside rule

De Rossi played in this role in Euro 2012 in the group match against Spain

To be fair, Pique is the same player just less solid defensively

Would you trade the 2006 WC for the 1994 one?

Sweepers did not always operate behind the main line of defence, the team sheet is mostly meant to accentuate his free role rather than actual position. it was perfectly viable to play the offiside trap with a sweeper.

Beckenbauer was always seen in the midfield

yesterday's sweepers are today's midfielders Baresi could early be an awesome CDM

Busquets was used as a sweeper in Pep's 3-4-3 formation

remember when Ferguson used to play Carrick in the back four?

fucking Michael Carrick was always been underrated

This.

Also, teams started to used the line of defense as a tool to shorten the field and use the offside with pushing up effects as well as pressure in the midfield. And on the other hand, attacking the offside line also developed as a fundamental offensive tool in football.

In short, not having a line of defence is suicide, so the sweeping role of the libero is taken nowadays by a specialized central midfielder that usually combines defensive and organizative capabilities.

Being a Real Madrid fan, I have to say muh Xavi Alonso ;_;
