Boxing is only slow when the fighters are ducking good match-ups and being ultra conservative/defensive so they don't lose their records. That wasn't really as much of a problem 20+ years ago, though. There are an incredible amount of classic boxing matches from back in the day that are worth watching the whole way through. And when both sides are going for knockouts, nothing comes close to the entertainment of boxing.
Recently, the Stiverne v Wilder HW match was really epic to watch:

Basketball is great because how often games go down to the wire, and how often buzzer-beaters decide the game. Combine that with nonstop back-and-forth action showing incredible physicality and skill

I went to see a CFL game live when I was a teen.
I knew football somewhat but I was baffled half the time about where the balls was (fake handoffs, etc) and such because I didn't understand the game very well. Got into it later, understand the fine points, love the game (NFL).
But with hockey, I grew up playing it, so I know where the puck is likely to go, I know why that guy is going here or there, where to look in a scramble, etc.
I also know chess well, so I love to sit and watch a big tournament like the London Chess Classic. But I sure as hell wouldn't expect someone who didn't know chess to be entertained.
In short, we like what we know.
