I can tell you in Mexico and most of South America they were seen as the pinnacle of excellence because of all their European cups wins. It was hard to see a regular la liga season game but much easier to broadcast the final almost like the World Cup and I remember seeing highlights of the game in their sports shows. Real Madrid built up their brand to a mythical proportion and attracting big names didn't hurt either. And they had Hugo so all the Mexicans felt they had one of theirs in there.
This generation's Mexicans are all about Barca. Barca used to be a more closed off club only caring about the fans in Catalonia but they sold out and pushed their brand to all over the world. Rafa played their so again you got at least one Mexican for everyone in country to feel pride in and also Messi the Marketable GOAT kids can bandwagon.
