The pinnacle of American Football is viewed as the ad break. Every rule in the entire game is geared towards maximising the amount of ad breaks that can be attempted within an hour. Its great viewing. What a thrilling sport.
Cricket is OK but I can't deal with all that sport. Sometimes several hours can pass without a single break! Can you imagine?
I hardly ever get to sit and watch advertisements for eight minutes while commentators frantically create stats to read out in cricket. If cricket wants to compete they need far more of it.
Also, there's far too much strategy in cricket. They bowl in too many areas in too many ways and they preplan their intricate game plan for the next four days far too frequently. What cricket needs to do is make the game shorter, so less time is spent actually watching the sport. Did you guys see the latest Broncos vs 49ers game? 15 television breaks to 34! The 49ers had no answer to Bronco's tactics of constantly ending plays to cut to an ad break.
Its this level of corporate support that is missing in cricket, where as you rightly point out, its just a bunch of athletic guys playing a sport against eachother for five days. Yawn

Cricket balls are rock fucking hard too, but are a much more comfortable size for throwing (I find baseballs just a wee bit too big to totally put my back into throwing)
The biggest problem people have switching from baseball to cricket is shot selection. In baseball the ball is always coming in the same square, and if it isn't in that square you can just ignore it, knowing it'll be a ball. In cricket you can bowl basically anywhere that's within reach, and you've got to be prepared for the ball to be at your toes or chest or wide out in front of your arms or whatever, which can take some baseball players a while to get used to. The bounce also plays a big part because it's not always even, sometimes it can jump up a bit more or go sideways or something depending on the surface and what the bowler is doing with the ball. This is in conjunction with regular baseball things like curveballs (known as swing) and slower balls
BUT if you're just playing for fun most of the bowlers will be slow enough that you'll never really have to worry about half of that shit. It's only when they get quick and you have to think really fast that that stuff becomes difficult.

It is very tough to be successful at baseball though. Hitting a 90 mph fastball is supposedly one of the toughest things to do in all of sports. Pitches chuck the ball and it doesn't hit the ground. Joe Burns is almost the complete inverse of Worst Marsh as a player. Where Marsh will play one amazing innings and then go on a shocking run of low-scores, Burns is the opposite. Burns consistently gets starts but always finds ways to get himself out once set. But frankly that is much more valuable to this team in terms of being a guy who can see the new ball off.
When Burns started opening I didn't like him at all and wanted literally anyone but him opening, even Watson. But of the two Burns has shown far more potential. Marsh is getting on now, he will never be the player he could have. Burns has shown himself to be mentally resilient and a player who has improved. You can't really say that about Marsh

New Zealand, for all the praise they've received and the talent they possess, still do not have one significant achievement in Tests over the past few years.
This is not an attempt to stick the boots in to them, but they often get praised as a "bloody good Test side" (as one commenter did in this thread) yet, to me, they've failed to make the most of the talent they have, so far at least.
I think there's been too much focus on being nice guys and not enough on being ruthless and doing whatever it takes (within the rules) to scrap to series wins.
If you look at the past 4 years, NZ's biggest achievement in Tests (winning a one-off Test or drawing a series are not real "achievements" IMO) is beating India at home...and that's a nothing achievement really given India are horrendous outside of Asia.
Last summer against Australia they had almost everything in their favour, circumstantially, and came out with a 4-0 loss. By that I mean that NZ had a talented and very settled side.
Whereas Australia was a rookie-riddled side which had just lost SIX long-term members of their team - their opening bowlers (Johnson and Harris), their in-form opening batsman (Rogers), their captain (Clarke), their keeper (Haddin) and their all-rounder (Watson).
Australia were absolutely ripe for the picking, as inexperienced and vulnerable as they had been in eons. It was by far NZ's best chance in 25 years to beat Australia and yet NZ got absolutely obliterated.
