Metal thread: /soc/ edition

Talk about songs, discuss bands, ask for recommendations, post youtube links, tell us about your local bands, etc...

Here are some dumb questions you can answer if you want to:
>A/S/L:
>Long hair?
>Three bands you've listened to a lot recently?
>What metal subgenres are you most into?
>What is the best metal song ever?
>Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden?

Are you into black metal? Have you always wanted to check out Venom who influenced all those early bands but you couldn't handle the low production quality, rawness and weird echoes? Have no fear, The Melvins are here! This cover of Venom's 'In League With Satan' is faithful to the original while being slightly more approachable:

Soilwork, Amorphis and Before The Dawn

Melodeath mostly, sometimes more folky and power metal too. Fookin' love me some Alestorm

>What is the best metal song ever?
Welp I ain't gonna say there's a best one ever because music tastes is entirely subjective but my personal favorite is Insomnium's In The Groves Of Death

>Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden?
I dunno, never really listened to either, I don't usually stray too far outside of my preferred subgenres

I found this band a few days ago and they're weird as fuck but pretty funny. Dunno if technically metal but I like it

Pic Related, I play drums in a thrash metal band. Give us a listen? Let me know what you think of us? Always looking to improve. Album's getting recorded this year.

Power, Thrash, and melodeath, mostly. Some specific folk metal bands I really like, but no genre is off the table.
>What is the best metal song ever?
Impossible to answer, even without taking other people's opinions into account.
>Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden?
Maiden. I saw them a few weeks ago in Tacoma. Never thought I'd get the chance. Now I can die happy

Favorite band is Avantasia or Edguy. Anything with Tobias Sammet really. Where I'm at literally no one I've met has heard of either. I have no clue why they're not more popular.

Mostly core, if you couldn't tell. Hardcore/Metalcore are big for me at the moment, although I lean more towards melodic elements. Thrash/Groove/Melodeath I can also get into, but not quite as passionate about. I've always found it kinda hard to get into the older styles of metal. Probably because I'm too young.

I checked out your bandcamp and it's pretty good. Definitely has that 'local' sound but the early thrashmetal vibe is great.
The 'Araya scream' in the beginning of the first song kinda missed it's mark though hahah
Otherwise it's all good

Speaking of Silent Scream and screaming, the next song on the South of Heaven has a pretty good 'Araya scream' at 2:10 after a nice gradual buildup

Naw, that's cool. They put out some good stuff. Actually saw them live this year, too. Their fan base is pretty dedicated / high energy.

Don't play, but husband does. Also used to do recording in our basement studio which housed a beast of a 10-piece kit. Had to rent a room for it here in LA, though, ugh.

I love live shows, though. Always keeping an eye on who's coming to town, but wouldn't mind getting to more indie shows. I don't mind if you post additional recs!

Thanks for mentioning Parkway Drive. I haven't listened to BFMV or Killswitch Engage in a while, but I do like them. Going to check out Parkway Drive now...

For me, right now, it's raising fear by armored saint. It's got a sick guitar solo.

>Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden?
Iron Maiden. Sabbath is the root of metal, but Maiden was my first metal band.
