I left Oregon a few months ago and had been living there since before it's rise as a hipster destination, when shit was affordable.
Assuming you want to live in a city you have heard of before...
Come with money. Come with real job skills for a career. Have even more money socked away.
Because too many people move there and housing isn't being built at a tapid enough pace to keep up, more people are looking for a place to live than there are places available. Portland in particular has a geographical problem with little place to add houses.
Cost of living in metro Portland is the second highest per median income in the country. Rent in Hillsboro can start at $1000 a month, houses rarely sell for under $250k.
