I don't really know if this belongs here, but it's somewhat /soc/-related, so I figured this was certainly better than /b/.

How the fuck do you have a conversation with someone?

I can do "Hi." I can do "How are you?" but that always ends with good. "What's up?" always ends with "Nothing." These conversations go nowhere. How do you actually engage with people? How do you get them talking?

Ask questions. Almost everyone likes to talk about themselves. Respond to their answers, ask more questions based on their answers.

If you're doing all the work, gracefully end the conversation and move on. It takes two to tango, and if they aren't giving you anything to work with it's not going to go anywhere.
