How do I grow my hair out without looking like a retard for a year while it's in between long and short?
I had to clip the sides and the back off when my hair reached about 8 inches in length to keep it from looking absolutely horrible, so now I have a retarded pseudo hipster cut. I was planning to give the top part a "head start" with this, hoping it would look different if the rest grew back, and the top kept growing, but now the sides just look unkempt no matter what I do with them.

just so you know mate, with that length of hair they will be short as fuck and won't look good for another 2-3 years. (my dreads were half the length of my original hair, that said it is much easier to start dreads with short hair).
By that time you will have had enough of taking care of them and will prob end up cutting them.
Also expect to be itchy (like all hell) for the first 1-2 months.
