For years, the kingdom of Antrael knew only war, as its despotic ruler waged unending battles against all surrounding nations in a mad attempt to expand his holdings.
Boys were taken from their homes and sent to the front lines as soon as they were old enough to wield steel, and far too often, this parting from their families was their last. Those unfit for duties toiled within Antrael's lands, producing rations and armaments for the King's ceaseless conflicts.
Eventually, a rebellion arose within the heart of Antrael itself, led by one of the King's own decorated generals. After months of subterfuge and guerilla tactics, eating away at the empire from within, the General struck down the King in single combat, usurping the throne.
Now, capitalizing on Antrael's infrastructure being in shambles, the three surrounding nations are pushing to conquer the land once and for all, divvying it up amongst themselves. This leaves the Usurper with no choice but to reluctantly continue the previous King's war out a sense of patriotism and responsibility towards his country, leading those who stood by him in the rebellion to feel that they themselves have been betrayed.
Our story begins with the protagonist's village being razed, and the loss of all their loved ones in the midst of a border skirmish between one of the neighboring kingdoms and the Usurper's army. The protagonist then sets out on a quest to end the Usurper's reign, that Antrael may be dissolved and integrated with the other nearby kingdoms, as there is no other way to keep the foolish King's war from claiming more lives far beyond the end of his own.
