I mainly only have opposite gender friends because we share the same interests when we have met in college. Just keep going to places of your interest and try to bump into someone there.

I was just thinking of a scenario of being in a typical nerd shop, noticing a qt grill looking at some dvd, then just going to talk about that dvd and other things similar to that

There isn't a difference. Some people just believe there is as the majority of a certain gender can behave a certain way that isn't familiar to them, whilst there will be some that are exactly like them. Some people don't see that though.
