Do you have any experience with hand tools, etc? I'd also consider doing a electrical prevocational course prior to getting an apprenticeship to give you a bit of a taste for what you're getting into. Alternatively, contact an electrician (preferably a larger company) to see whether they are having an intake and maybe do some work experience before you fully commit.
