Your "ASL"s can be an elf princess and the rugged but gentle half-orc knight that saves her, or the dragon that keeps her. Or maybe you're sci-fi greasemonkey, or the pilot of the starfighter she's repairing. Anything is valid.
>How do I get started?
Before anything else, come up with the character you want to fuck as. Try not to make a boring character, make someone you think people would want to interact with, it doesn't have to just be sexually! Once you've come up with your character, register an account on https://www.f-list.net and create a profile for them. If you're having trouble with concept, feel free to talk here with us in the thread or join our channel with a blank profile. We're happy to help you figure things out!

After you've created your character and think you're ready to actually ERP, open F-chat 1.0 or 2.0 from the chat tab on the top left of the Homepage. Look through the Public Channels and find the ones which interest you or apply to your character. If someone's ad interests you, look at their profile and private message them if they still interest you, or wait for someone to do the same to you. You can also post your character here, there's a chance one of us will be interested.

Looking back at some old shitscribbles, I've started thinking about maybe making an f-list profile based on a particular character. Been wanting to do it before but couldn't find any fitting art and wasn't sure about wanting to rely on my own. Now I either don't care or feel confident enough that I can improve.

Most people seem to prefer some description of what the profile is like as a character and the sex stuff. To get an idea of how they interact with others and how scenes might work out other than just what position it will be in.

Backstory is only useful if it serves as a way to get involved with your character. "We served in Kuwait together and now we meet at a bar and we're gonna bone".

Backstory is only necessary insofar as it immediately informs your character in the here and now. Otherwise you should leave it alluded-to at best; loose threads make for scene hooks. You want flexibility here so you can spin stuff out with potential partners.

It's just an ONA/web series, not a full fledged OVA or TV show, so the episodes are shorter to reflect that.

I do like well-written customs. Really over-long profiles are kind of a strike against, especially when you have mountains of backstory that's probably irrelevant to whatever scene we're gonna do. Coherently-chosen art of passable quality is always a plus. Honestly though, more than anything else, it's a gut feeling - just something about the way a profile is put together that makes me think "yeah, this is something I want in on." Terribly un-scientific, that, but so it goes.

Nice formatting (Not Necessary), quick to skim through to get the main idea, a strong sense of character, and a moderate custom kink list that helps direct what sort of scenes the character is looking for.
My profiles have none of these things, but let's just look over that fact. More than profiles though, first interaction with a person is what really matters to me. An average profile can be carried by someone who's cool OOC so hard.

Collapses are useful, yeah, but they're also a turn off, and people doing what I listed off tend to essentially create three different profiles on one page instead of focusing. One "setting" collapse is fine, but the general rule of thumb is that you don't use a collapse unless it's a good paragraph or two... and this information doesn't really need to be a paragraph or two.
Just work in that your character is available for any setting. No need for detailed paragraphs with divergent options.

You've got a good outlook on things. I'd say the best approach to ERP is to cast the net wide, harrow your catches, enjoy what you can, and keep close the ones that really mesh well with you. Personally, I got ridiculously lucky and hit it out of the ballpark with my very first partner on F-List, but I'm not so naive to assume that such is a common tale.
There'll be good scenes and bad; loyalists and flakers. Sometimes you'll have something enormously promising fall apart for whatever reason, and sometimes modest beginnings will blossom into something truly amazing. It's all part of life in the Zone, and the best thing to do is take it all in stride.

I'm hitting 30 soon myself and now finally understand why almost everyone I've ever known past 35 just sits on the couch, nodding in and out of naps as they vegetate in front of a TV watching reruns after work.
