To be fair, "lover" is a very strong word. Not many people want to commit to such a strong promise. I mean, "I want to date you" means "We'll eventually break up when the passion runs out.". "I want you to be my lover" basically means you're taking the bet that said passion won't run out. It's a strong promise.
