Okay, I did overstep a little there; it's not just a matter of drive. But like I said above, taking steps to improve yourself in the right ways does make a difference at the physiological level, which is where many forms of depression stem from.
I was bipolar depressive for 2 years in late undergrad. I changed my diet, started working out regularly, sleeping on a normal schedule, and picked up hobbies and over the course of about a year and a half worked my way out of it without meds. Today, a few years later, I have very few symptoms, and if they start affecting my life again, usually I've fallen off of my regimen and when I force myself back onto the regimen within several weeks they diminish again. Don't underestimate the power you have over your own mind and body.
