I have a question /sci/, why do most of you always whine about your IQ or IQ generally? There's always a thread talking about IQ, doesn't it get boring?
Now for a /sci/ related question, is there a special class that you can take that is designed to increase your IQ, if not, is it possible?

So I recently received a letter in the mail detailing that I have been nominated to participate in an "extremely selective" program for "future scientific leaders". It's asking for 1.5k to travel to Boston and attend a conference for 3 days. Do you guys believe this is legitimate, I am a fairly academically successful student after all (35 on the ACT *cough* *cough*), or is it just a scam? Yes these problems are relatively easy. I picked them since you don't have to have too much specialized knowledge or training.
The first one is just all n equivalent to 0 modulo 3. The value of 2^n - 1 modulo 7 is periodic in n with period 3, and the values that occur are 1, 3, and 7 (or 0, if you prefer). It's easy to show inductively that this pattern continues by noting that to get from 2^n - 1 to 2^{n+1} - 1, you multiply by 2 and then add 1.
The second one can be done in essentially the same way, but the values modulo 7 which occur are 3, 5, and 2, so none of those numbers are multiples of 7.

Because it takes guts to handle some of the compounds you only dare read about. And you don't need to be that smart to be brave, in fact, it's easier to have guts if you're not any sharper than you have to be.
Apparently a Japanese prob took this picture of the Earth from several thousand miles away, in deep space. This is lovely, bit it raises some questions.
My initial question is, why can you see no stars in the photograph? You just see the Earth and Moon. A consensus is, the Earth is so bright, it washes out the light from the other stars. It is compared to when you see the sun in space, it's so bright that you can't see anything else.
But by this same logic, how are we able to see stars at night??

Hey OP, have you noticed that you can't see the sun at night? So how could sunlight wash out the stars?
I can't say I know much more about cameras than you, but that's clearly the problem. The brightness of the moon does not wash out the stars at night and the moon and Earth wouldn't wash out the stars to the naked eye in this image. But the eye is a pretty good camera and this Japanese probe doesn't seem like the best.

CS majors, how much math did you actually do? How much of it was mandatory?
I feel CS has way too little math these days. Freshmen complain and don't see the use of it, and in more advanced classes later years they are completely confused because they never bothered to put any effort into it.
At least at my school, we do a good amount of maths. Classes involve proving things mathematically and then programming up the solutions.
The /sci/ hate for CS is weird. Either they go to a trashy college where CS is bad ( and their own major is bad too ) or they haven't looked into the CS degree enough to actually say anything about it.

Computer science and mathematics double major.
I've taken quite a lot of math. Probability theory, statistical inference, discreet, complex variables, foundations of math, linear algebra 1 and 2, calc 1,2,3, and an analysis calculus course. I guess numerical methods could be considered as math although really computer driven.
I'm still waiting to take abstract algebra, diff eq, number theory, differential geometry, and I want to take a course relating to forecasting and prediction methods using math and computers.
