Why do you guys mock philosophy so much?
Philosophy is a great pursuit, and I find people who are generally educated in philosophy more interesting and successful than people who think it's a joke.
>>8200610
In the words of my grandmother
"Oh, I love philosophy. It's a great hobby and only a hobby."
Useful to learn about oneself and how to organize thoughts and ideas. The people that study it though are generally pretentious even by /sci/ standards so there's a reflexive denial.
>>8200615
There are definitely alot of edgelords who study philosophy to try and be "le superior intellectuals". But everyone I know who's actually graduated with a philosophy degree or read enough over the years are fine. Is it because people only get exposed to philosophy on places like 4chan?
>>8200610
We don't mock philosophy. We mock postmodern philosophy and continental philosophy.

ITT: We lay the theoretical groundwork for neural enhancements that would increase intelligence.
The eventual goal would be a collectively written general purpose research grant application. The research grant would be written with animal experimentation in mind, this means that the proposal will need to meet the stringent ethics guidelines of a university.
I am not a researcher, so I am not trying to crowdsource any personal project out to you guys. I'm just trying to start a fun project that may hopefully be incorporated into actual research if anyone wants...

>neural enhancements that would increase intelligence
Genetic engineering et al. and even then it's a crap shoot. The brain is too complicated to just stick a computer chip into.
I think that we should focus on mammilian brains.
Raven and octupi might be intelligent but I doubt that the research would be applicable to humans.
The brain would have to be large so that would mean either primates, pigs or cetaceans. I would focus on the primates. Pigs are not the best candidate and cetaceans (although very smart) would require far to many resources to care for.
So i'm working through a LA textbook, and i'm at the end of chapter 3 (span, basis, dimensions).
I thought i was doing ok, i thought i was getting the answers right, and then i came to this question.
I completely do not understand how the answer is obtained.
From elimination I come out to
1 3 4
0 -5 -5
0 0 0
and i don't know what to do now to get that answer.
Also when it asks for a basis, does it mean column or row?
Let's try to understand what is being asked. First let's write the problem in matrix notation:
[eqn]
\left[ \begin{array}{ccc} 1 & 3 & 4 \\ 2 & 1 & 3 \\ -1 & 2 & 1 \\ \end{array} \right]
\left[ \begin{array}{c} x \\ y \\ z \\ \end{array} \right]
=
\left[ \begin{array}{c} 0 \\ 0 \\ 0 \\ \end{array} \right]
[/eqn]
You are tasked to find the solution set for this system of equations. That means you want to find every [x;y;z] (column) vector that satisfies the equation.
It is a basic fact of LA that the solution...

Wow, you are phenomenal, thanks so much! This all makes a lot more sense to me now.
The problem i am still having now is that i cant get the RRE form :(
I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong.
1 3 4
2 1 3
-1 2 1
to
1 3 4
0 -5 -5
0 5 5
to
1 3 4
0 -1 -1
0 1 1
to
1 3 4
0 1 1
0 0 0
I thought i understood elimination and gauss-jordan elimination but i guess not :(
>>8191021
They're asking for the nullspace.
>0x -5y -5z =0
This tells you z=-y
>1x + 3y + 4z = 0
>1x + 3y - 4y = 0
This tells you x=y
So all solutions are of the form (x,x,-x) for any x. This is a 1 dimension space.

I don't think someone can do well in math with that kind of spirit. Either you study math because you like/love it either you do engineering/business studies.

There's literally no way it can reduce emissions. Aside from that, if your shit isn't tuned for it, it won't be good.

It comes with a tuner if you buy the right kit.

So noticed a lot of ants in my bathroom last night... this morning they made a pile of ant eggs a corner. I would prefer not to spray them and get 10000 dead ant bodies in my bathroom. How do I get them to NOT want to move into my bathroom. They seem to be VERY fast at relocating their nest. Tallahassee Florida.

I don't think they'll make a new nest in some place that isn't underground.
just leave them alone for a few days and remember to report what is happening.

Hey /sci/ this is a dumb question, does a magnet lose its magnetism by touching uncharged magnetic objects?
For example, if you were to get a Umagnet and have an endless stream of uncharged magnetic plates being passed separately in a conveyor belt. Would getting said Umagnet and touching each plate (one after another) for an infinite amount of time eventually discharge all of the magnetism the magnet originally had?
I am asking in order to understand if the Umagnet's action of aligning the spinning particles within the uncharged plates is temporary or permanent....

You are my hero.
hello /sci, im a comp sci undergrad on my third year, and ive always had little faith on humanity and ive been losing it everyday, i always wake up and turn on my computer and see such absurd news atrocities and wonder what we have come to
so i decided from today that i will make it my goal in life to lead our race into extinction, and since im majoring in comp sci i thought that i would do so by creating an AI that would wipe us out in a terminatoresque way
do you think its possible, given a deacade or two?
do you think it would be easier to learn biology...
Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
It's probably not just possible, but inevitable.
yes i imagine ive hear a bunch of theories, although most are pop sci clickbaits like
YOU WONT BELIVE WHAT STEPHEN HAWKING JUST SAID ABOUT AI
somre seem to be legitimate concerns, and lets say its inevitable, a billion people can scream inevitable but until someone starts to work on it it wont happen, so is it possible that if i start now, i could put a plan in action twenty years from now?
and is there anyone who works with AI here? or who studies it?
