When can I call myself a mathematician?
I'm almost done with my bachelors in math
>>7711593
when you get your phd
in general, only phds are called scientist, physicist, mathematician, etc...
When I hear the term, it means to me that you are working in the field or actively doing research. It's a description of what you do. Call yourself an artist if you do art. Call yourself a computer programmer if you program computers. Call yourself a mathematician if you do math.
Being a math student doesn't qualify in itself. There's a term for that.
I don't think you need to have a PhD or be a professor or anything like that. There are amateur mathematicians who make significant contributions.
>>7711593
When you actually contribute something great to the field. Until then, you are just a hobbyist.
done with chemlambda. source: https://plus.google.com/+MariusBuliga/posts/2SZ9j3bk698
Hello Marius. How is this different than the work that has been done on simulated metabolic networks using graph grammars?
http://www.tbi.univie.ac.at/software/GGL/
Wut.
Mail me pls? GGL is great, I don't want to steal your thunder, I'm always open to discuss, are you? Chemlambda is a graph rewrite system (like GGL) with a random algorithm for reductions. Differences: (1) not any rule, but a small specific set of rules (why: because making rules is cheap and the explosion of consequences is huge), I think that by accepting any rule there are very small chances to fall over really interesting ones, have you seen what chemlambda does? (2) the accent is on individual molecules which eventually do the job in a random environment, instead...

What went wrong?
Lack of education and groupthink, which arises due to a lack of quality education (or any higher education at all in the case of lesswrong).
>>7710841
The guy can't handle criticism.
HPMOR is a damn good story if you can get past the autistic main character. Same with TWC.
I think what went wrong is that lesswrong was always more of a collection of insight porn than a real self-sustaining community, and kinda died when the constant stream of insight porn stopped.
Do you guys even lift...?
Black science man does.
This is a thread on SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS, everybody. Just look at how shitty this board is.

Fuck off, you can't even squat 4pl8 loser.
Here, have some Acetyl Coenzyme A.
>>7710340
BSG has a 3plate squat? Pretty decent for an old man though I doubt he actually squatted that in proper form.
Why does /sci/ hate biology?
>>7709395
Its a meme field with theories like "evolution"
>>7709395
because math/ engineer fags think that bio involves very little math when computational and mathematical biology are quickly becoming huge fields.
>>7709395

Why is a+b=b+a ?
We define it that way.

So truth is arbitrary?
Why isn't it?

No one is good at math.

Well there be mechanical engineering jobs in 2018? Will they still pay well?
Everyone's dropping out of the major left and right.

What's your schedule next semester?
First year student here. Not 100% sure on major but thinking about Chemistry. What to expect out of Gen Chem. 1 and Calc 1? Also, I have to take either philosophy or psychology and I'm going philosophy, anyone have any opinions on Philosophy classes?
>american government
>>7697752
/pol/ Sci or American government is required and I did well in the high school class
>>7697748
Well, I don't have a schedule next semester because I'm a horrible, lazy failure
but, I have taken both a psychology and a philosophy class before, and I personally enjoyed psychology more.
Hey /sci/ i am needing help medically. If there is any doctors or better yet eye doctors on the board, please, help me figure out whats wrong with my eyes!
Symptoms:
>vision is blurry if object is farther away only in right eye
>eye crust forms a lot
>brim where eye lashes are located is swollen and discolored as seen in photos
I haven't done/taken anything different besides my new prescribed vyvance 30mg medication for ADHD.
I have had weird problems with this medication...

Sup, /sci/. I posted earlier about a MATLAB simulation I've worked on with a collegue and friend of mine.
I made a video that showcases the results of my double pendulum simulation:
https://youtu.be/ALdNphEbo4g
I have shared the code here:

Let me know what you guys think.
Dude what, how you have like 100 rows of one equation?
Explain this
thetaDoubleDot1= l1.^(-1).*((-32).*m1+(-20).*m2+4.*m2.*cos(2.*(psi1+(-1).*psi2))+ ...
4.*m2.*cos(2.*theta1)+(-2).*m2.*cos(2.*(psi1+(-1).*psi2+theta1))+(-2).* ...
m2.*cos(2.*((-1).*psi1+psi2+theta1))+(-4).*m2.*cos(psi1+(-1).*psi2+( ...
-2).*theta1+(-2).*theta2)+4.*m2.*cos(psi1+(-1).*psi2+2.*theta1+(-2).*theta2)+ ...
6.*m2.*cos(2.*(theta1+(-1).*theta2))+m2.*cos(2.*(psi1+(-1).*psi2+theta1+( ...
-1).*theta2))+m2.*cos(2.*((-1).*psi1+psi2+theta1+(-1).*theta2))+4.*m2.*cos( ...
2.*theta2)+(-2).*m2.*cos(2.*(psi1+(-1).*psi2+theta2))+(-2).*m2.*cos(2.*(...

Will high-powered portable lazers replace guns as the main weapon for criminals and for self-defense?
What comes after guns /sci/ ?
>>7713125
Yes. Weapons that slowly burn tiny holes instead of imparting force and that can be easily reflected are going to replace guns.
>>7713136
>high-powered portable lazers
Think of a lazer pen that can burn a hole in cement instantly, or chop a man in half in one swift movement.
If nuclear fusion is ever miniaturized to the point of being able to be used in vehicles, we might see tanks that use laser or directed microwave weapons at extremely high levels of power, capable to near-instantly melting anything that they can see, which would have advantages in direct engagements but be useless in indirect ones.
