Hey /sci/, I have a questions:

Is there more doors than people in the world?

Are we including car doors? If so, it's an unequivocal yes. If not, I still think there's more doors but I'm not as certain as if we're including car doors.
>>
maybe, maybe not

probably more humans actually
>>
Considering that in third world countries like china, india, africa, the middle east and also most of south america, people just do not have doors as they are safe without them. I'd say that there are more people than doors.

I assume tritium control and for additional safety margin.

Linguistics is a science. It's not even a soft science; it's fucking science.
>>

I think linguistics is an extremely interesting and promising scientific endeavor, but it's unfortunate that there's so much disagreement among professional linguists. almost every subfield has a few divisions. in historical linguistics you have strict neogrammarians vs lexical-diffusion people. in morphology you have word-based vs morpheme-based approaches. in semantics it seems like nobody agrees on anything. in phonology you have mostly optimality theory people but there are definitely dissenters out there....

It depends on their relative velocity vectors. The possibilities are:

- collision: this is a singularity that requires perfect initial velocity including stationary relative to each other
- orbit: they go into orbit around each other
- hyperbolic/parabolic: they interact and go their separate ways.

Given their distance and mass it would be unlikely they ever meet.

Why hasn't he published any well-cited papers? Where's his alleged revolutionary theory in theoretical physics? Two papers (both co-authored) while a graduate student in physics is not what I would call "an IQ higher than Einstein".

IQ does not ensure results in math or physics, it will only help one understand these concepts.

He published what’s known as Barnett’s identity while working on his theory of quantum astronomy:
[eqn]\sum_{n \,=\, 0}^\infty n \,=\, \frac{{\rm e}^{\mathrm i \pi}}{11.999\dots}[/eqn]
He derived it by thrice iteration of integration operators and by evaluating non-trivial zeros of real valued second degree polynomials of a single variable. A very difficult work in topological probability theory.

Math noob/filhty autodictat here, would like an elementary doubt cleared please

Can I say that all real numbers that can be represented as the length of the one of the sides of a 2D object are not transcendental numbers?

Can I say that all real numbers that cannot be represented as the length of one of the sides of a 2D object are transcendental?

Pic related (sort of?)

>>
All trascendental numbers have length and limit. The only thing you can't do is use transcendental numbers as results to fractions.
>>
Sorry, sorry, forgot to add a condition.

The 2D object in question is an object that can be drawn with straight edge and compass in a finite number of steps.

I have a pure math degree. Decided to study mathematics that applies to CS. I don't give a shit about making video games, programming or any of the traditional CS shit.

The people I know think pure math and theoretical CS is useless and the only useful thing in CS is around making shit like web apps or programming. They think if you don't program then you aren't doing real CS. It pisses me off and I can't think of a good way to justify pure math or mathematics applied to CS. im really a mathematician pretending to be a computer scientist. What kind...

Step 1) Stop being an insecure shit trying to convince an arbitrarily small number of people about your views (even if you're more intelligent than them)
Step 2) Thank me (your welcome)

I can't help but think that a need to prove the validity/applications of what you do to people who aren't from your field or understand your field (along with the field in which applications or validity is present), is just a bad, bad, life skill for any pure mathematician.

If you discover something solid,...

Thanks for the excellent reply. I mostly targeted it towards someone I know (close to me) that values programming knowledge over mathematically 'useless' knowledge (or useless in the sense it isn't meaningful unless applied).

You're completely right. This speaks more towards my own insecurity and need for validation and dependency. I don't need to justify studying to anyone. Plus, I don't really know if I should say I study "computer science". Most the programmers I know...

If chromosomes are the definitive method of determining biological sex, male and female, then how come so many people continue to say that it is actually genitalia that defines gender?

I'd say that due to malfunctions such as baby girls being born with a penis or baby boys being born with both a vagina and penis. This is a pretty poor method of determining which gender a person is assigned to at birth.

What is wrong with using chromosomes define biological sex? It's more indisputable.

Also, I ask this as a purely scientific question about biology.

What is the point of this thread? Anyone worth listening to would already assume chromosomes define actual biological sex, more so than physical genitalia. XX female, XY male.
>>
Sex and gender are not the same thing dumbass.

It's also a gene on the Y chromosome that determines sex (SRY). Put that gene on an X chromosome and progeny that is genotypical female (XX) is born phenotypically male.

Is it possible to convert an XX to XY by adding SRY to one of the X chromosomes?

starting uni after the weekend, could I get some advice?
good studying habits, note-taking methods, what to do in lectures/tutorials, etc.
how much further will I get studying a few hours a day, compared to only doing the minimum required homework?
would you recommend extracurricular? clubs, societies? meeting people in general?
also should I use my laptop in class?

my current game plan is to take hand-written notes in class, then rewrite and organize them into separate notebooks which I can use later on for revising and things. I have a laptop, but I don't...

Stay away from transcription. So many student in write verbatim what the Prof. writes then don't understand what they wrote down because they weren't focusing on what was actually being said.

Do practice problems. Get in groups. Ask questions. Use office hours. Use every resource in the school. Do internships or co-op. Don't be afraid to take an extra year.

Probably should've mentioned that, I'm doing computer science. I've got obligatory comp & math courses & I'm taking Japanese as an elective.

How would you recommend I record what went on in the lectures, then? I'm pretty confident I can take notes intelligently, understanding and paraphrasing, not just copying the slides or transcribing the lecturer's words.

Other advice sounds solid too, I'll keep...
