Orthotropics, is it just a meme?
Does improving oral posture actually work?
https://youtu.be/0vn47Dwd7Mw
The evidence is there, why would you ask if it's a meme unless your a mental defect. The mechanics of oral posture is rudimentary orthodontics, Dentists want you to think it's genetic because $$$$$$. Mike will make us all slayers

What is the future of capturing carbon emissions from the atmosphere? Can such a technology exhibit the rapid increase in efficiency that computing power experienced from the 50's-present, or is it intrinsically impossible to make economical or feasible in a large application, similar to seawater desalination?
>>7966720
It is extremely unlikely. The problem is CO2 is like fuck all percent of the atmosphere. 850 ppm is still like fuck all of the atmosphere, which means to even get a bunch of CO2 at reasonable timeframes you need a fuckload of area or to move a fuckload of CO2 through filtering shit.
Steven goddamn Chu thinks we can extract CO2 from the atmosphere and turn that shit into hydrocarbon fuels so that we can even out seasonal variations in energy generation with fuck tons of renewable.(Chu likes nuclear too)

>What is the future of capturing carbon emissions from the atmosphere?
There is none, yet.
>Can such a technology exhibit the rapid increase in efficiency that computing power experienced from the 50's-present
No.
>or is it intrinsically impossible to make economical or feasible in a large application, similar to seawater desalination?
Yes, but more-so.
>>7966720
If you want to take CO2 out of air your best bet is to trap it at its source, such as capturing the effluent at the smokestacks that produce it. Even doing this is insanely expensive and not very productive.
If you're worried about global warming, this may not be the solution. We're better off limiting out production of greenhouse gasses as much as possible. Also, the planet is a massive living biosphere that can sometimes cope with stress and regulate itself, hopefully.

I'm a 3rd year environmental studies major and I'm trying to get the ball rolling with internships and such - seems like there are openings all over the country with the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Interior. Anyone here ever worked for/is currently working for a government agency? Are they selective or is it fairly easy to land a position?

HAH gay don't get shit for internships. Bums me the fuck out too.

I'm sure it is quite easy for an engineer in a good uni to get internships.

aw man there's a screenshot somewhere with all the books and steps on learning mat but i dont have it, bumping for someone to give you it
Khan Academy touches the most important parts of the subject, but it's shit if you want to prepare for tests since the problems given by the Mongolian Academy are never type your teacher gives you. It's great but have some reference from the class
t. Received a shitty education and studied with khan Academy for college entrance
Great way to learn if you use the exercises and only use videos when you are stuck. They have quite good calculus materials. Should be enough

What is the significance of the fractional derivative? Does it define any process or have any (current) uses in the real world?
fractional fourier transforms come to mind

So my chem prof (we're doing C of hydrogen/hydroxide) just showed us how to solve for +-b^14 using the good ol' quadratic formula. I objected thatit can only be used on quadratic funcs ie the power of 2. I was rebuffed, including by my classmates, many of whom are in calc. Am i wrong here??
lol math is useless bro
shut the fuck up
>>7966387
>+-b^14
what does that mean?
If you want to see how quadratic equations are used, and in some cases simplified under certain assumptions, in equilibria, see chapters 6-8 of this

How quickly can someone reasonably progress in math? How long should it take someone to be comfortably adept at single variable calculus? Multivariable calculus? Differential equations? Linear Algebra? I know everyone learns differently, so I'm asking for more of a reasonable timespan (2-3 months for example) than an absolute timeframe.
you shouldof grasp the fundamentals by the age of 12ish
Am I the only one who thinks such a question is a definition of stupidity? I mean, even if you get an answer, how can you verify it? And if you could easily verify it, why the fuck are you asking it?

Is it possible that a woman has a weak(er) child if she has a hard time getting pregnant?
Anything's possible if you believe in yourself.
>>7966234
Is there any proven correlation?
>>7966223
your question will be answered in the affirmative if there is a single woman who has trouble getting preggers that had a weak child.
seems likely
Suppose you performed an independent-samples t-test to evaluate mean differences between two groups in a study. Then, you performed an ANOVA on the same data. You noticed that the critical t and critical F values in your two tests seem to be related somehow.
Assuming your study had 20 people (10 in each group), describe the relation between the critical values of t and F in each test.

How similar is studying statistics compared to studying mathematics? I doubt I could handle a complete mathematics degree (or at least well with decent grades) but statistics looks somewhat fun.
What I'm especially concerned about is about the emphasis on mathematical proofs.
>>7966169
Statistics is applied math. I suppose it varies on the individual institution, but in my UG classes we did proofs in class to show that something worked (more importantly for intuition WHY it worked) and then actual out of class work was typically doing statistics. Studying to do statistics isn't too bad, studying to understand statistics can be hard because it gets VERY intuitive.
Statistics=shit

As a complete moron who frequents this board out of admiration and aspiration, i've decided to actually try and study some basic topics that are somewhat relevant here.
As i'm just starting out, anyone have any good online sources that can teach me the basics of calculus? Thanks guys. Pic unrelated.
MIT OCW
Download the PDF of the book Thomas Calculus Early Transcendentals 12th edition. There's a solutions manual floating around somewhere too.
Its what I reccomend to everyone that wants to learn calc on their own. It goes over all three calc classes, just learn some basic trig stuff and you'll be ready for Calculus.
There's a publisher called "Dover" that has some very nice books at a very affordable price as well, just stay away from Kindle versions. I've heard Kline's Calculus is very good as well from Dover, but I have no experience with Kline.
KhanAcademy will be perhaps a little easy, but helpful if you get stuck while working on other resources
Quick. What's a good, quick (ideally small?) software I can use to take a 3D molecular molecule and animate it (I just want it to rotate 360 degrees and have it in a short video clip). I want one of those animations like some Wikipedia pages have (look at the page: amphetamine, nice animation there).
Pic related. Molecule I want to have an animation of.

A molecular molecule? Thats pretty advanced
ChemDraw/Chem3D might work

Can I export as a video or some shit or will I have to film the screen?
Maybe (literally filmingit) would be cool and add some nice effect to my vid with the shaking. I'm trying to make it kinda shitty on purpose.
What's the point of performing science if the way things work (the "laws") could change at any moment? Can we safely assume they won't?
Pic unrelated
What do you mean they could change at any time ? That a theory could be proven wrong or that the actual reality could change (for example gravity stops existing for some reason)
If it's the latter we'll probably die a few seconds after the laws change so who cares.
If it's the first then you can still adapt the theory if it's true in most cases, until you find a better one.
They're only going to change if we have enough evidence of them changing. As in, we have to conduct scientific experiments to discover that happening.
I feel like you need to reword the question or something.
