Fruits, technically speaking, are the fleshy ovaries of flowering plants (angiosperms) which bear the seeds that enable said angiosperms to reproduce. Vegetables, on the other hand, are the roots, stems, stalks, or leafy material of plants.
If you are American(see Nix v. Hedden), or in a kitchen, however a Tomato- which does indeed contain seeds- is considered a vegetable! Why? The main difference when it comes to cooking is taste, of course. So sweet fruits are considered fruits, while savoury fruits such as eggplants or tomatoes are considered vegetables.
