what was the first meme, s4s?
I'm not looking for the first mainstream and popular meme, like trollface or something.
I want to know what was the first instance something was referred to as a "meme"

stupid frogposter
the word "meme" has been used for a very long time.
but if you mean on the internet, they actually used to be called "fads".
also before trollface and stuff like that existed, but the word "meme" was used, it wasnt used for as many things as is it used today. not everything was called trolling either, e.g. if you put thumbtacks on your teachers chair in middle school it wouldnt have been referred as "trolling"
either this or hamster dance if you're talking about internet memes.
if you mean ancient memes probablyraping you're mum
surely there is an archived post of someone somewhere saying "nice meme", or "wow what a great meme", referring to a humorous image in a way that no one had ever done before?
wow this research is taking me deep
"For Dawkins, the meme exemplified another self-replicating unit with potential significance in explaining human behavior and cultural evolution." - notes on the first usage of the word in Richard Dawkins' book "The Selfish Gene", in 1976
"Memes, analogously to genes, vary in their aptitude to replicate; successful memes remain and spread, whereas unfit ones stall and are forgotten. Thus memes that prove more effective at replicating and surviving are selected in the meme pool."
"Some commentators have likened the transmission of memes to the spread of contagions.[22] Social contagions such as fads, hysteria, copycat crime, and copycat suicide exemplify memes seen as the contagious imitation of ideas. Observers distinguish the contagious imitation of memes from instinctively contagious phenomena such as yawning and laughing, which they consider innate (rather than socially learned) behaviors.[23]"
