It's pretty damn autistic to think that there was a conspiracy to keep her "desperate" -- she was a millionaire many times over even before she started acting thanks to her parents, and after Star Wars she never needed to work again. She scored big in a kind of movie that 9 times out of 10 actors and actresses spend years trying to live down. This one turned out to be the role of a lifetime but after that she was the friend in When Harry Met Sally or the wife in The Burbs. She was never going to become Streep or Glenn Close.
