Well -- about five years ago, I watched a video on using gimp to xray. Basic level method. Since then, I've switched to Photoshop and mostly use color channels rather than the basic level histogram -- and a lot of trial and error. I use different tool and methods based on what I think will work with the colors and light conditions.
One tip -- I often do a light gaussian blur (setting of 1-3) before doing anything because I found that blur improves the latent data and thus the result we are going for.
