http://jobs.unimelb.edu.au/caw/en/job/887973/lecturersenior-lecturerassociate-professor-in-pure-mathematics-applied-mathematics-statistics-3-positions

The University of Melbourne's School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of Australia's leading mathematics and statistics schools. It has achieved this status through the high quality of its research and teaching programs. The School offers a wide range of subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students and is involved in aspects of community life that impact on the interests of the School and the discipline.

The School is seeking to further enhance its expertise in applied mathematics, pure mathematics and statistics, and seeks to appoint suitably qualified female candidates in three full-time continuing positions:

· 1 position in Applied Mathematics

· 1 position in Pure Mathematics

· 1 position in Statistics

How is this news to you?

Have you seen academia nowadays? Its a huge safe space for women. Im pretty sure who ever typed this up is a woman herself. Why would you even work in academia? Cant cut it in the real world?
>>
>>74344926
Can't? Or can't be fucked?
>>
>>74344926
Not at my uni.

Clubs were not allowed to *officially* discriminate on gender, and neither were staff.

HOWEVER, when I was in the Computer Club, one of the members, a hardcore feminist, started a girls only computer club. They weren't allowed to officially advertise as a club on campus with the other clubs, so they set up near the computer science building on the other side of the campus, and got other members of the actual computer club to tell girls about it.

They also held a social formal drinks event where members got a discount entry ticket, and non members didn't. Women could sign up to be new members at the door. Since it was a girls only club, guys couldn't join.

So, essentially, in a roundabout way, guys were charged more.

Provided academic standards are maintained more women studying maths is entirely a good thing.

A lecturer basically only needs to know their slides and content. A more knowledgeable lecturer will only be better able to answer students questions. Students questions nearly always relate to something that will not be assessed anyway.

I am a current Melb Uni student and have done classes in the stats/maths faculty.
>>
>>74344790
Lel, UniMelb is already cucked. Its only purpose now is to hand out degrees to Chinese students. They literally built a whole building dedicated to Asia (don't believe me? Google (Sidney Myer Asia Centre").

That's half their fucking job.

Surely you can claim discrimination.

They're a university lecturer, not a kindergarten teacher (although funny there's no male only kindergarten teacher positions when it's a female dominated field). They're getting paid >$100K/year for a relatively low stress job. Being the best person for the job is not an unrealistic demand

The new Architecture building is by far the biggest sign of the asian student infiltration. Like 1/3 toilets are squat toilets.

Melbourne does have a conflict of interest between keeping its academic standards and the number of international students they let in. The more international students they let in the lower the bar needs to be set. However international students can pay 2-3X as much in fees when compared to local students.

It is a problem, and plenty of local students are getting frustrated enough to voice it.

>>74345770
>That's half their fucking job

It is a good chunk of it, yes. But for the most part if it is assessed it will be covered in the vanilla lectures/labs.

I guess it is fair to say that they will most likely not fill these jobs with the best candidate. Whether or not the candidate is good enough though is a different measure.
>>
>>74344926
If you fail to see the utility of a proficiency in applied maths and in stats, you must not have taken any courses in econ, physics, and computer science.

As for "Pure Mathematics," well.. on the one hand, one might recall the words of G.H. Hardy (i.e. one of the most influential number theorists in human history), in his Apology:

"I have never done anything 'useful'. No discovery of mine has made, or is likely to make, directly or indirectly, for good or ill, the least difference to the amenity of the world."

On the other hand, cryptography is, in large part, applied number theory.

In short, I respect you and whatever life you lead that requires no understanding of anything more sophisticated than back-of-the-envelope arithmetic. But I think you're being unduly dismissive. Or yer trollan, w/e.

>diversity is more important than the quality of our education
Yeah, I want off this ride.
>>
>>74346233
I just wonder how long it's going to be before universities start seeing the consequences of their actions. I guarantee international employers will start wondering why graduates from a top university in an English-speaking country have fuck all English. I reckon in the long term it's going to hurt the reputations of the supposedly 'prestigious' universities in Australia. It's also shit for me, as my degree will probably be devalued as well.
>>
>>74346493
Nearly all students speak fluent enough English to converse with. Most will struggle with doing oral presentations in English though.

There is a noticeable drop in the quality of writing produced by international students. Also the work they produce will generally not be as well researched as for local students.

The bar is set lower in undergrad than postgrad though.

Our degrees are probably being devalued a little. However the flipside of this is that employers will need to put more value on the interview stage when looking for employees.
>>
>>74347033
They will only put up with so many Ching Dong Wongs flunking their interviews before they start blacklisting Melbourne uni graduates.
Sure, Australian employers probably aren't going to stop hiring/interviewing from the best universities in Australia any time soon, but it doesn't take much for international companies to decide the top Australian universities aren't worth shit. Part of the reason you go to somewhere like Melbourne uni is that it has some level of international recognition, so it opens up the possibly of working abroad. Otherwise I may as well have gone to some shit-hole like Latrobe, where the workload (I know from friends) is much lighter and it's easy to get high marks.
>>
>>74345955
I believe that our government has called for more gender diversity in the work place. I work in the rail industry and recently there were female only positions posted for Track work jobs. Everyone I work with, mostly men and one redpilled af female co-worker believe that gender diversifying is bullshit and my female co-worker calls other women lazy and useless for believing in the gender wage gap.
>>
>>74347400
You should hear from my mate's dad, who's a senior electrical engineer. They've resorted to hiring literally any woman with an engineering degree to meet quotas. He was telling me they hired a chick with a chemical engineering degree recently. His company has zero chemical engineering roles (it's quite specialised) but they had to fill their quota somehow. They're going to have to teach her electrical engineering from scratch, but hey at least it's a diverse workplace now!
>>
>>74345955

I will make it legal.
>>
>>74347363
Employers will read the name on top of the resume. Whether or not it is legal for them to do so they will be able to identify Ching Dong Wong ahead of time. From what I have seen Deakin and RMIT have a huge number of international students as well.

Also I am pretty sure like 50% of the STEM degrees the US awards go to international students anyway.

Melbourne Uni's increasing focus on social sciences is impacting on the quality of the degrees they offer at least as much as the presence of the international students.

You mean one woman who wants the D, and will repeat whatever said D wants to hear.

That sounds extremely dangerous.
The firm should just invent sedentary positions and fill them with women, or make all janitorial positions women-only.

In case anyone was wondering what that is:

"Special measures
(1) A person may take a special measure for the purpose of promoting or realising substantive equality for members of a group with a particular attribute."

You should come sit in on my commerce tutorials at unimelb if you actually believe this. I have a few classes where I'm the only non Chinese person in the room and it's literally just me and the tutor that speak. When the tutor still bothered to ask the Chinese students questions at the beginning of the semester more than 50% of the time they would just stare back or yabber away with their friends to see if one of them understood.

On top of this I know that they all work together and pay people to write their assignments so how exactly are they surviving the exams?

>commerce

And I thought my I.T. classes were bad, my condolences not that the learning conditions seem all that different.

Most courses at least in my Uni as long as your overall mark is over 50% it doesn't matter if you fail the final, if you can get a 70% average through paying your "tutor" to do your essay and quizzes/prepare assessments then you only need to get 20-30% in the final to pass which especially when the exams have a large multiple choice component is pretty easy
>>
>>74346020
>tfw I hate female teachers because most of them were poorly organized, rambled off on tangents and taught little to nothing of the subject
>>
>>74346020
I've never had any amazing female teachers at throughout Uni (In 3rd year). Some pretty decent ones, one pretty bad one but no great ones, where as I've had several great guy ones. With that said I've had also had shit guy ones, and my tutors/lecturers have been like 85% guys so there's more a sample size to get both good and bad from. I think in general educational staff at Unis tend to be pretty good If they're experienced. Younger student tutors tend to be shit I find so I appreciate that most of my tutors tend to be in the 50's or 60's and have had decades of industry experience.
