I've had 2 partners and had pre-marital sex with them. Personally I ask for forgiveness everyday for the sins I committed with them. I'm waiting now till marriage to have sex. I've had it plenty of times before and it was hallow and I never felt good afterwards. That was because I was tarnishing the process of creating life. I don't judge others on sleeping around because I've done it before. God will be their judge, but that doesn't mean they should stay willingly ignorant of their constant sin.

I was born and raised a Catholic but never really cared and became a fedora. I want to read the bible properly but which version is recommended? I know KJV gets namedropped a lot but isn't it for Protestants?
>>
>>74138000
KJV is the only one you should read. It's mostly a bunch of boring drivel and the parts where things actually happen make very little since. Goddamn, kikes have the most non-sensical myths.
>>
>>74138000
KJV is protestant and shouldn't be read. I don't know the international version but I have the New American Bible version and the catechisms of the catholic church.

Remember, your interpretation of the bible might not be how the holy mother church interprets it.

Good day Wolfie, actually just came on to /pol/ to see if you were going to make a Catholic General. I've finally been baptized into the Catholic Church as well as taken part in communion for the first time. And I just wanted to give another big thank you for helping me with all my questions when I was thinking of converting, and peaking my interest in Catholicism over other denominations in the first place.

God bless man.

In regards to finding an appropriate Bible, what you should be looking for are bibles that include the Apocryphal or Deuterocanonical books in them. These parts are cut out in all Protestant bibles and I believe that is the main difference between our Bibles. And I'm sure plenty of Protestant bibles change a few things such as the body and blood of Christ to figurative language or something.

>>74137617
Societal norms do not dictate what is right and wrong nor what is best for people and society. The core of the issue is the dislocation from love and, to a degree, a dislocation from humanity's own dignity. To put a person forward sexually before anything else or solely hurts the dignity of the person being viewed. It hurts communication and how people in society view one another. Further, as /pol/ would constantly espouse, the growth of acceptance of sexuality has led to a growth of empty hedonism and falling apart of families in society and has done considerable damage because of it.

And society, at large, says that people largely do not stay abstinent, not chaste.

>>74137623
Welcome back and thanks for the bump.

>>74138000
The KJV has a beautiful, poetic translation but ultimately is lacking in books. It's a Protestant Bible. At best you can find one that includes those books but labels them in their own section.

Now I do not promote reading scripture purely out of hand - I heavily promote having secondary sources so you can grasp intention along with the genre and structure of the specific books in the Bible as well. The New American Bible and Douay Rheims Bibles are both respectable in my opinion - the latter being moreso - but I'm one for heavily recommending study bibles so you can learn more.

I would recommend the Ignatius Study Bible.

These days it's understood that they go to Heaven.

Limbo was theorized because the Church used to be very hard about needing to be cleansed of Original Sin before entering Heaven. However, they realized that God wouldn't forever withhold himself from infants just because they had the bad luck to die before being baptized.

Hello, brothers and sisters. Peace be with you. Hope you've had a blessed Pentecost.

In the interest of learning more about each other, who's your confirmational saint? Or if you weren't confirmed with a saint's name, who's the saint you pray to the most?

I knew even in middle school that I wanted to be a writer, so I picked St. Francis de Sales. I think he's the reason I've become, as far as I can tell, quite a good writer.

Probably the best way is to avoid the temptation.

That being said College has a lot of drinking and women that will probably seduce you. Try to remember not to engage in it. But if you do pray for forgiveness and this should help you do better in the future. Just don't go around actively trying to sin, try your best to avoid it. And if you fall, seek reconciliation and try stay away from sinner with renewed vigor.

>who's your confirmational saint
I got baptized yesterday and my confirmational saint was St Martin of Tours. I've always had a soft spot for beggars/homeless and when looking up a Saint I found that he had big roots in Italy, Spain and France all of which I have strong nationalism for and love with a passion. Found him however because he was Patron Saint of Soldiers and I just wanted to read up on that.

High Masses are extremely traditional, and much more masculine.

However, remember, you go to Mass primarily to receive the Eucharist and to commune with Christ. It shouldn't be about feeling strong and manly.

>>
>>74139081
I assume you mean to ask what happened to the unbaptized babies that die? For quite some time there was never a solid argument one way or another. Limbo was a name for a position theorized where one did not merit the struggle of Hell and yet has original sin which keeps up from beatific vision (Heaven). This was never dogma but generally the best answer the early church fathers largely gave based on what they knew of the situation. The church maintains a "hopeful" position while unofficially accepting the works of the church fathers over the century. They are by no means punished.

But, of course, I must remind you of the forms of baptism. The formal baptism we all know of is just a form it can take.

>>74139576
I can't say I'm fully versed in all the details of Vatican II so I'd really have to refocus on specific innovations in ecclesiastic practice.

There's much misunderstood of innovations - "Traditionalist Catholics" and Orthodox being in the position usually of thinking that Vat. II brought about doctrinal shifts for the sake of modernization - but generally I can only take it on as a case-by-case basis. Even if I were more well versed in Vat. II overall it would take too much work to do justice to the council overall.

>>74139992
At least you bumped the thread.

>>74140391
>Wolf, how does one resist temptation?

I hope you know how big and varied that question is. Ultimately all that can be said to something that big is to having self-control.

One thing I see laypeople in the faith do is take Catholicism's way of life in a penal sense. "I have to obey these rules". It's given in a rules sense to be starting steps towards your transformation by the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, it is about seeking virtue through wrestling with your own issues to achieve our own natural fulfillment in Christ.

"I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." -Jesus Christ, John 15:11

I could go into it further if you have questions

>I can't say I'm fully versed in all the details of Vatican II so I'd really have to refocus on specific innovations in ecclesiastic practice.

Cool, thanks. There's a parish 2 minutes from my home that I visited a little while back for a weekday mass in the evening, since my Orthodox parish is 30 minutes away in good traffic (weekday evenings it's about 90 minutes). I was feeling pretty drained that day and my parish isn't big enough to hold Vespers every evening (and I can't make it to those anyway as I mentioned due to traffic). Even though the Mass was far shorter than what I'm used to I found it pretty cool that I could still find many commonalities, such as the three Aleluias after the Gospel reading. I didn't partake in communion of course but it was nice to be in the company of Christians that day. I might start coming regularly on weekdays. Is that unusual?

Also, there's another parish a few minutes away that holds the Latin Tridentine Mass every Sunday. Worth a visit? I've heard it's as beautiful and perhaps even more awe-inspiring than the Divine Liturgy we use.

Please go on. How does one resist sexual temptation? Obviously these are dark times and women are as tempting as ever. It's easy to resist porn and masturbation, but it's harder to resist women around you. Is abstinence so important?

Of course I would hold that there is no innovation in doctrine - at best innovation in expressions of that doctrine. The role of the church fathers would be to assist in guiding the people, as always, but their work historically is good evidence for guidance by the Holy Spirit in accordance to Sacred Tradition by viewing consistency.

As for a specific innovation, I suppose one of the most well known is the transition from specifically Latin to whatever the vernacular is in the location at the time. This is seen as a massive change and is due mainly to the church's view coming into Vatican II as the church itself being a pilgrim in the world rather than a powerhouse as it was in earlier times. This is what people mean when they say that innovations occurred due to "the spirit of the times" but their failure comes from saying it works against Tradition and even scripture.

For instance, think St. Gregory and St. Cyril preached specifically against lingual heresies and worked to teach the slavs in their own tongue. Even further, do remember the differences in language in even the early church (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek).

Latin came about as popular as the church, with all its power, wished to unite the people under a language so that they can work closer together. They took on this incentive with the language that was the vernacular at the time - Latin. Over time the church lost influence and so teaching and doing in solely Latin was becoming less practical (if not damaging) which brought about this Vat. II decision. Ultimately this does not effect doctrine, this is - as I said - a change in its expression.

There's a Latin Mass at least once a month at a church here in my city. I need to go more often.

Interestingly enough, the second most traditional church in the city is the tiny little Catholic student center attached to our local university. It's interesting being around people my own age who are every bit as traditional as I am. The women my age even cover their heads during Mass.

You find thriving Catholic communities in the oddest places. One of the greatest Catholic strongholds in the U.S. is this small town in eastern Kansas called St. Mary's.

>>74145846
My first recommendation is to borrow or use a Missal. The entire Mass, save for readings before the sermon, the sermon itself, and hymns sung by the choir are in Latin as was always intended so the Mass would be universally the same (Catholic means universal in its etymology).

Ladies will cover their heads with a veil or hat. Dress etiquette is always very formal. From what I have seen, Novus Ordo churches frequently have women wearing pants and everyone wearing t-shirts. Traditional Masses always have women with skirts and men with collared shirts and slacks.

I suppose the most important difference is Holy Eucharist on the tongue, not in the hand. This is so no particles of Our Lord's precious Body and Blood are accidentally strewn onto the floor. Everything is carefully done to minimize this risk.

There is a rule of secrecy and generally lots in the way usually to keep you from being seen, fyi, but you need not say anything in great detail. Speaking of the vice related to that sin (wrath, sloth, etc) can be as effective and I've heard it being allowed multiple times. As long as you get the problem out there the detail is hardly necessary.

>>74143622
Of course.

>>74144778
Abstinence is not the important part - chastity is. The focus on abstinence comes from trying to give Christian teaching while still allowing the modern trend of later-life marriages and less family life. Many see the call of sexuality and emotional longing early in life to show the interest in marriage. Further, the disfunction of society trying to appease these desires through different means (porn and the like) while ignoring marriage usually get expressed by Christian thinkers as us working against "God's design", if you get my phrasing.

When it comes to women in life I would be quick to parse admiring beauty from sexuality. Aesthetics are a part of life and beauty is not to be shunned. However the abuse of that would be lust. Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself. This applies to sexual scopophilia as well. The core of seeing someone sexually is viewing them as individual object, I'm told. To parse admiration of beauty from sexual longing see their bodies as relation to women generally rather than just upholding some individual thing. We refocuses you on what you're doing.

As for women possibly hitting on you, remember that the good exists outside of the agreeing of individuals. If a woman wants something of you do not act on simply what they want or you want at the time but seek the good of all things and don't be complicit in their own issues but seek to guide them towards God's will for their own good.
>>
>>74146205
Ok thanks, sounds a bit more formal than what I'm used to at my parish but I'll manage. I'll borrow a missal to follow along.

The Eucharist thing doesn't really affect me as I mentioned I'm Orthodox, but thanks for the head up anyway.

No, albeit relatively close doctrinally.

If I were to draw a line with Constantine on the Church Fathers I would say the first would be the Essences/Energies Distinction as opposed to Divine Simplicity:

>"For God is simple and non-composite and without shape" - St. John Crysostom

Again from St. John,

>"[Paul] knows [God] in part. But he says, ‘in part,’ not because he knows God’s essence while something else of his essence he does not know; for God is simple. Rather, he says ‘in part’ because he knows that God exists, but what God is in his essence he does not know" -St. John Crysostom

>I have often heard the charge that Western Theology adopted the idea that God is entirely simple from pagan philosophy. However I am starting to find evidence in the Church Fathers that this is simply not the case. I will begin with a quote from St. Iranaeus that demonstrates that the idea of divine simplicity was present among the Church Fathers. Throughout the next few days I will provide more quotes.
"Far removed is the Father of all from those things which operate among men, the affections and passions. He is simple, not composed of parts, without structure, altogether like and equal to himself alone. He is all mind, all spirit, all thought, all intelligence, all reason . . . all light, all fountain of every good, and this is the manner in which the religious and the pious are accustomed to speak of God" -St. Iraneaus, Against Heresies 2:13:3

I'll have more quotes in a follow up.

How do the rest of you view that the weak Pope has set up a council to debate the beatification of blessed Aloysius Stepinac, cardinal of Croatia, a voice of reason and love in war time, murdered by communists post war, where the council is made up of Serb orthodox priests?

Isnt it outrageus that a people who aided the communist in murdering him, members of a church which will not beatify him in their church either way, be part of such a council?

It is unthinkable that a butthurt people such as the Serbs, who view any righteus Croat as a criminal, be given a right to voice their opinion on this. Shame on the Pope.
>>
>>74147432
>that last greentext

Big typo on my end. My apologies.

To continue:

"But there is neither nor ever shall be such a dogma in the Church of God that would prove the simple and incomposite [God] to be not only manifold and variegated, but even constructed from opposites. The simplicity of the dogmas of the truth proposes God as he is" -St. Gregory of Nyssa, Against Eunomius 1:1:222

>“We perceive the operation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to be one and the same, in no respect showing differences or variation; from this identity of operation we necessarily infer the unity of nature.” -St. Basil, Letters

The strength of the latter quote being the comment of essence. If we were to weigh Palamas' interpretation of God against this view the argument of St. Basil would fall to plurality of essence and lead to the same "polytheism" criticism it is known to get.

We've all been there man. If you have had a valid confession, your priest should have said at the end that you are absolved of your sins.

Once you have completed your penance, the sin is gone from your soul. God's love trumps all. You need to accept that God's grave can accomplish anything. I'm not saying to act as if it never happened, but just know that you're forgiven.

It has, and it is natural, but this is preprocess. A council to determine weather or not start the process, i think... But the worst part is that it is made up of orthodox priests too.. So what is next, anglicans, protestants, jews and muslims in councils about beatification?

It is silly considering that the saints will only be revered in the church they are beatified in, in this case, the catholic one.

Pope Francis is trying too hard to be loved and stuff like that, sure he is a nice guy, but the world needs a stoic but lovable Pope, like Saint John Paul II was.

It seems that they are drifting apart, more so than coming home. They have been training new priests, so it seems that they have no intention of reuniting with us, and I'm sure that the recent statements made by Pope Francis about considering female deacons isn't helping.

I admire them for standing up for tradition, and I can even agree with some of their points. But the bottom line is that Christ himself created our church, and swore that the gates of hell would not stand before it. If the society believes that holy mother church has lost its way, they are denying the words Christ spoke.

SSPX member here.

Hoping for a reuniting in the Church very soon. I, of course, believe all the sacraments offered by our priests and bishops are legitimate and that Vatican II should never have happened.

There is too much evidence that the liturgy was weakened by a change to the vernacular for me to ignore. I dream and pray for the day when Holy Mother Church is completely whole again though.

To your point though, I believe SSPX is currently in talks with His Holiness and I am hoping to formally hear a declaration of unity and tolerance for the Latin Mass.
