Why is it so hard for people to wrap their heads around this concept?

Good.

>>73986235
Sweet automation bring it on
>>
>>73986235
Because it doesn't work. And Berkeley is more liberal then Sfo so of course they're economics department is empty.

When they did this in Washington, lay offs were rampant. Small businesses went under. And people who got the raise asked to work less hours to stay on benefits.

Nothing good happened. They did not stimulate the economy. They did not get off welfare with a 'livable' wage. The only difference now is they work less hours for the same money and local business owners lost their livelihood.
>>
Employers don' hire staff they don't need. If there is a job that still needs doing it will be outsourced. I bet this is nothing more than creative accounting to make the bills look smaller than they are and will be.
>>
Do they want to raise it for the sake of it or because their work is worth $15 an hour?
>>
>>73986573

It really makes you think about how a "grass roots" movement was possibly funded by larger corporations to push small business owners completely out of business.

Unless you're the owner/operator the 15 wage makes it completely impractical to run a small business.
>>
>>73986235
95% of all jobs are useless and/or can be automated

this is the real redpill
>>
>>73986741

It's a red pill that our society can't handle though. Virtually no one I talk to can imagine a post-automation society. They're still completely locked into a 19th century economic model.
>>
>>73986235
Because if you're a loser that is worth less that $15 an hour then you deserve to get sacked. We're transitioning into a post-industral robotic automated future. Low paid unskilled labour is going to be a thing of the past regardless of the law. Anyway now that these nigs and spics are going to be unemployed its a great opportunity for the yanks to kick them out of the country with minimal economic disruption.
>>
The minimum wage will always be $0. Anyone who claims otherwise is either lying or delusional.

>>73986235
This would be somewhat possible if we weren't looking down the barrel of automation. Just like the industrial revolution forced farmers to become factory workers, this 15 min wage will only spur on the automation revolution.

I also HATE the notion that if you work 40 hr a week you should get a living wage. Why? People are paid at what their employer values them at. Every 15 min wage report or interview I see involves the person with either a kid, an iphone, or nobody else to support them. If you can only check people out at McDicks you deserve to scrape by until you are more valuable.
>>
People deserve a livable wage. I think you fat cats can afford to pay people an extra 5 dollars an hour when you are making millions a year. Sorry not sorry you can't buy that extra helicopter.

40 hr a week at 7.25, which is the absolute least wage, gets you 1160 a month. Let's just say 800 after taxes, which is still way less than you think for poorfags. 500 could go to rent with a roommate, and 300 is plenty for food, transportation, electricity, water. Fuck off

Except in this case, it's a major public university that doesn't necessarily offer economical products to the market. The value of their academic services and research is where it lies, so it can easily be lead astray and make retarded financial decisions with hiring as they don't see immediate and crucial consequences as a private business would.

What happen here is that they probably underestimated the costs of the rise for the low-level, mostly service and maintenance employees, and the fact that they will probably have to boost the wages of people in intermediate or manager positions of those departments accommodating to the wage increase, to keep them. Not to mention all those grad students will probably bitch if they're not included or paid the same as the low-level entry service and maintenance employees, and will probably ask for a few dollars over it.

What if someone doesn't have a roommate?

What if someone has children to raise?

>>
>>73988259
>What if someone doesn't have a roommate?
Get one or move to a cheaper city. You are not entitled to live on the California beach on minimum wage.

>What if someone has children to raise?
Whose fault is it that someone has children and no job? Why should we destroy the economy to pay for someone else's mistakes?

>What about unanticipated expenses/emergencies? They'd have little to no extra income. They also wouldn't have enough for insurance.
They'd better have enough for insurance, since Barack Hussein Obama has made it illegal NOT to have insurance and will fine them significantly if they don't get it.
>>
The problem is minimum wage used to be for high school kids, just like fast food restaurants. Now its mostly immigrants.
>>

Yes because moving will work when you have no additional income every month. Oh wait.

>Whose fault is it that someone has children and no job? Why should we destroy the economy to pay for someone else's mistakes?
I see your point, if someone has kids (rape cases aside) before they can afford them, that's on them, but what if someone got laid off and they had kids after having a job? You can hardly fault them for that.
>>
>>73988497
>Get one or move to a cheaper city. You are not entitled to live on the California beach on minimum wage.

Worked for me. Unemployment pay exists for a reason. Jump ship and find a better living condition.

>but what if someone got laid off and they had kids after having a job?
Because, for example, their job's pay has been artificially increased by 50% by whiny college kids and is no longer profitable?

>>73988801
>living wages
Stop lying. That isn't what we're talking about, we're talking about artificially increasing the minimum wage. You can live off of minimum wage in this country, period, you just can't live everywhere in the country at whatever lifestyle you desire.
The rich will complain because of labor shortage--meaning they will pay more for that service. That's how it's supposed to work, retard.
>>
People really don't comprehend labor markets

In my area there actually is a healthy enough supply of jobs without any increases, why?

>Minimum wage is used for shit jobs and as a starting point.
>Companies realize that paying minimum gets you shit workers and anyone worth a damn leaves due to not feeling adequately compensated.
>Companies eventually realize that there quality of worker is causing insane production/customer satisfaction issues.
>Companies increase wages hoping to attract better workers again.
>Dead weight that now has increased wages get increased pressure on them or hours cut due to their now increased wage if they aren't just laid off.
>Dead weight eventually leaves.
>Eventually you cycle through to a better quality of worker.
>>

>>
Why is a minimum wage law needed at all?

Why can't people work for the pay for which they're willing to work? How's it the government's business if someone wants to take a $5-an-hour job flipping hamburgers?
>>
my 1st and 2nd assistants make 15$ and they now have their own places and are buying whatever they want

15$ min would wreck everything
>>
>>73989058

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT INCREASING THE MINIMUM WAGE BY 50% WOULD MAKE PEOPLE LOSE THEIR JOBS!?!

Oh and don't forget the people who were in high paying jobs that now give jack fuck about it because a burger flipper makes the same amount as them.
>>
>>73989340
Because liberals would rather people not be able to get jobs. This way they create a class of people who exist only by leeching off of the government. It creates liberal voters for life.
>>
>>73986235

because we have no idea how it will play out

I really fear we will learn nothing from the failures of socialism, rewarding idleness begets more idleness which increases stagnation and demand for government

government then becomes corrupt, shitty, and massive (like any monopoly), increases taxes, and slowly an ever greater portion of the economy is non productive, until eventually the productive private sector (ignoring productive state enterprises, less common in the west) is strangled to death and the whole thing collapses

also, why the fuck would you invest the time and effort to learn advanced robotics, spend billions to set up and automated factory, and then get taxed at 99% to pay for 10 million people smoking weed and masturbating at their roboticlly built apartment?

I hope we don't have to go through a century of upheaval and chaos as we experiment with robo-communism vs protectionist luddites who ban automation to protect labor

>macroeconomics is the art of aggregating away all important information

increasing minimum wage drives down labor force participation, and forces small business operating at the margin out of business

so it may increase aggregate consumption but pulling money away from savers (reducing capital) and to consumers, but it also shifts aggregate firm income towards large companies away from small business (reducing total innovation and job growth)

Even if thousands of jobs die by raising the minimum wage, it would be a good thing.

1) Get rid of useless jobs that don't need to exist

2) The jobs still left have to pay a reasonable living wage

3) The higher unemployment leads to more unrest, riots, and homelessness, which is a necessary step to bringing us closer to the inevitable basic income
>>
>>73994276
>The jobs still left have to pay a reasonable living wage

Hahahahah no.

If the useless jobs don't exist anymore, people will be forced to join the skilled workforce to survive. The labor market will be overflowing with STEM majors and the wages will fall through the floor, so the only way to compete will be to get better and better degrees.

By 2050 electrical engineering will be a blue collar job.

You do realize there won't be enough jobs for the amount of people who need them right?

There already isn't, in the future with increased technology/automation, there simply won't be enough work available for the amount of humans that need it.

Not everyone can get the careers with high skill/education requirments, there simply isn't enough of them to go around, there already isn't. Do you know how many people get out of college with STEM degrees and can't get a relevant job right now?

It doesn't even matter, there's ALREADY not enough programming jobs.

Do you know how over-saturated software development is right now? It is very difficult to get a job as a programmer right now. It's one of the least in-demand STEM jobs.

What a cuckbag. I'm pretty sure McDonald's makes fuck tons of money enough to give their workers $15 minimum wage and still make fucking billions.

>Muh Automation!

It's more affordable to pay for a kiosk and maintenance than a current minimum wage worker. Their jobs are already going to be replaced. Might as well as for the raise upfront right now while you can.

>Muh small business!

Only point he makes sense on. The minimum wage should be progressive depending on how much money you make. If you incorporate then fuck you. Pay the fee.

You can take burgerflipper out of McDonald's but you can't take McDonald's out of burgerflipper.

Some people are dumb and lazy, and by some I mean 99% of population. They need those menial jobs, you can't automate them.

Where?
The industrial revolution was different, we stopped needing to work to survive so we could focus on other tasks.
With automation those other tasks CANNOT be simple tasks like the industrial revolution created because they'll just be replaced by more automation. The only tasks that won't be replaced are ones that require complex thought, engineers, programmers, inventors, artists (kek), not everyone has the ability to learn these jobs because a large number of the population is simply too stupid. Engineers are one thing since it requires you to be smart enough but inventors and artists can only be a tiny minority because of how the job works.
Take horses for example, pre-1886 horses were fucking everywhere and were probably the most useful animal humans had, they had a job (moving us around) and they did it well. Then here comes the car that replaces them, what jobs did they go to? Only a very tiny percentage of horses still have a job because they're too stupid to do anything else.
>>
>>73995813
>there is no reason to believe we won't experience the same in coming decades

Yes there is, the amount of people needed to create and maintain the technology/automation is not even close to the amount of jobs that will be lost.

There simply won't be enough jobs for humans, there already isn't. There will be massive amounts of homelessness and unrest/riots.

>they will have to get educated, it's not that hard

Even if every person got high-level education and skills, there wouldn't be enough jobs for all of them.

What don't you understand about this? There is people RIGHT NOW who are getting out of college with STEM degrees, and they are not able to get any relevant job.

>automation will get rid of jobs because people are dumb
>this means all these dumb people will never find a job anymore

You guys are looking at this all wrong. When automation relieves the workload of several sectors, this allows people to develop even more in other sectors, which then create jobs.

Now I don't know which sectors this will be. I can guess that programming and engineering are going to blow up but there may also be many others.

The idea that only smart people got a job after the previous revolutions is retarded when you take into account all the easy shitty jobs that were produced after, like stocking shelves in megamarts or flipping burgers in a fast food joint.

"The amount of people needed to create and maintain the technology/automation is not even close to the amount of jobs that will be lost."

Also just lmao at you thinking that programming and engineering jobs are going to "blow up". Everyone and their mom already thought they would be secure future-proof jobs more than a decade ago.

There is a ton of kids getting out of college right now with programming/engineering-related degrees who can't get a job, because all the jobs are already taken, they're outsourced, or the jobs left are fiercely competed for and the employers can choose from hundreds of applicants.
>>
>>73996948
>this allows people to develop even more in other sectors
And why don't those sectors already exist?

>I can guess that programming and engineering are going to blow up
As another guy said earlier, you don't need 100 million programmers and engineers. Besides, a burger flipper isn't going to be able to learn how to program or how to be an engineer.

>The idea that only smart people got a job after the previous revolutions is retarded
>previous revolutions
They were fundamentally different than this one. This one has robots replacing any job that requires no complex thought.

Having the motivation and having the ability are two different things.
They have the motivation to murder because they're starving and want your food.
They have the motivation to work because they're starving and need food.

They have the ability to murder (which is well known).
They don't have the ability to get any smarter.

I've been wondering if this whole minimum wage thing could be good for the US. Isn't there a chance that this might actually harm minorities and drive out spics?

I mean, the minimum wage jobs generally go to the uneducated, minority scum, because they're willing to work for next to nothing and don't have any other choices.
If the minimum wage increases, doesn't this make these jobs more interesting to young white people who need to work off their depth or get work experience? Seeing as white people are vastly better and more responsible employees, wouldn't businesses prefer to hire them, thus squeezing blacks and spics out? There are likely to be fewer positions to fill, as businesses aren't going to afford as many employees, which means that the ones they do hire need to be dependable and efficient, something minorities aren't.
Granted, the whole diversity quota shit could ruin this, but there should still be more competition.

It would drive them out of the work force (assuming the government doesn't step in and force diversity). It certainly wouldn't drive them out of the country though, welfare's stopping that.

From what I understand, more spics are leaving than immigrating to the US. If you combine Trump's presidency and harder competition for shitty jobs, that might drive more of them out.

Granted, you're stuck with the niggers. They're going nowhere.

Because rather than actually talk about how any "social contract" was betrayed by TPTB and how we've been tossed out to rot by their owners (aka Big Big Multis) we'll focus on frantically keeping the jobs we have.

The problem isn't the fucking pay, the problem is there ARE NO FUCKING JOBS TO BE HAD BECAUSE WE FUCKED OVER OUR ENTIRE COUNTRY SO WE COULD SELL OURSELVES CHEAP CHINK SHIT ON CREDIT FOR A CURRENCY THAT IS WORTH 1/50TH ITS ORIGINAL VALUE NOW.

Let that sink in, we are headed for a shitstorm. People are amazed that a reality TV start might be president but they don't bother to think that they've been living on borrowed time for over three decades now...

because they sense the oncoming shitshow that is the collapse of the "current" American system. Actually, we've been in collapse mode for over a decade now, a population of frogs in a slow boil that have been treated to "free" medicine, lots of antidepressants (ever wonder why we are really depressed...perhaps because there is a good reason why?), and in some states, weed to take your worries away. TV used to do all of this but it is losing its grip, so there is a mad shuffle to push that form of distraction to streaming, where it has morphed into TV-next-gen with commercials and other bullshit.
