Both Trump and Bernie oppose our current trade deals like NAFTA and the TPP. They both in different ways have said globalization is killing American jobs while China is getting said jobs.

Economically, does /pol/ think globalization is bad or good? It does allow products to be made cheaper and better while companies can pay less in taxes and wages, leading to higher profit margins.

>does allow products to be made cheaper and better

It can. It's called "comparative advantage". Nations as a whole can specialize and become more efficient thanks to trade. Some principle as domestic competition can be applied internationally.

However, this is a purely economic view of the situation. This has other consequences.

It makes corporations more powerful. It can prevent third world nations from developing. It makes less powerful nations less sovereign. It reduces bargaining power of workers. And it eliminates low-skill jobs from developed countries.

Some will claim that it ALWAYS all balances out and that offshoring all of our manufacturing will always yield better, service-industry jobs. It's bullshit. A lot of workers become unneeded in their own nations, even though we still need what they were producing. This can be compensated with training and education, but it's expensive for people and may not even payoff. And people might have preferred their old jobs and stability, but they got forced out of it.

The reason NAFTA was supposed to create US jobs is that it was supposed to create a new, large middle class of consumers in mexico which would drive up US exporters. Instead they just import components, assemble them, and export them back.

>companies can pay less in taxes and wages

It's probably the reason it is happening.

Post-industrial nations probably do not benefit all that much from comparative advantage. Social issues and unemployment are more serious problems.

This is also done as part of a greater geopolitical struggle to spread US influence and make nations dependent on its financial system.

>"comparative advantage".
When the US became independent, it's comparative advantages were things like raw cotton. Had they listened to what economists told them, the US would be still a resource colony for the rich European industrial nations.

She's not funded entirely by corporations. She's a known beneficiary of terror-sponsoring divine right monarchs.

Oh yeah. The US fought it off at some point!

The interesting realization about comparative advantage is that even if you can't produce ANYTHING more efficiently than your trading partners, you can still benefit from it (theoretically). By exporting something that you produce inefficiently, you can free up more efficient production capacity for something else in other nations which is even more valuable, which you can then import. In the end it should work out and give you a little bit more wealth in total.

Proponents of globalization use this point to claim that free trade is ALWAYS good. BUT, this ignores other aspects of society and culture, and the problems that it causes.

And yeah, it discourages development since it allows you to benefit from the development of other nations without having to develop. You are somewhat better off, but still not as well off as if you were a developed country. It makes you a slave.

TPP bad.
Globalization could be good if it didn't have the focus of fucking the worker while giving the profit to the 1%. Trickle down economics is a dead meme.

YOU HATE AMEHRICUH!?!

Where are there no shills, we were promised shills... Is no one being paid to shill for Hillary? I want to see that million dollars in action. Maybe just popping in and defending globalization would be too obvious. They did it in other threads though.

This

The major problem today is GREED.

Isn't it human nature to be greedy though? I think greed is okay as long as you don't fuck over your neighbors or society.
