No, it didn't, though it was surprisingly large. However this economy was badly mismanaged - much like the USSR, which also had one of the largest economies in the world and yet couldn't feed its people.
Russia has had the same problems for as long as it has existed. Whether it's the Emperor, the Commies, or Putin, the Russian economy always looks the same. Why? Because it is a _Russian_ problem, not a socialist problem. Moscow did not micromanage every satellite state. Each had more than enough local communists to source a party from, and they didn't need nudging from Moscow to nationalize everything and obstruct free trade.
Scandinavian countries are functional, because they've given up on socialism as a mode of production and classical liberalism made them so rich in the first place, they could afford the luxurious waste of socialist distribution, until they were swarmed by niggers at least.

Now that's hilarious, I remember as a teenager reading a book my dad had on his shelf with the dry title of "The Economy of the Soviet Union in the 1970s" It sounds dry but was actually very interesting as the writer interviewed dozens of factory workers, managers, logistics clerks, and bureaucrats responsible for implementing the 5 year plan goals.
It was amazing reading, the Soviet bloc had absolutely no method of QC outside of military procurement. Their entire economy behaved like an interstate traffic jam, where clogs and delays rippled back far from where the problem started and effect everything.
Because under a centralized system there was no mechanism to compensate if the wrong raw materials were delivered or not enough, your factory HAD to meet quota or be punished. So all the plant managers set up a black market trade network of quietly stolen state goods to make sure they all could meet their monthly quotas. So socialism effectively *required* a well functioning black market to survive.
Never mind the computer revolution, the Soviet economy never could figure out what to use computers for aside from giving their accountants spreadsheets
