That's not uncommon these days. Just about every blue-collar trade is made up of men above the age of 55 who are retiring without anyone to replace them.

I went to community college for 2 years, graduated, and have done absolute dick with my bullshit degree, meanwhile all these shitheads I went to school with are banking a good 70-80k a year as journeyman welders and plumbers.

I'm wanting to get in on this racket since I know it's good now and will only get better, but I'm not sure how to go about doing it.

I have tried to starting a business thing. Right out of college I worked for a start up, after a year it failed and I headed out to a major company. I'm 25 now and it's been about 18 months since then. I could go back and try working for a start up again, really depends if I want to take the risk.

In the tech industry, and any industry really, starting your own business is largely influenced by luck and your ability to expose yourself to the right individuals. It's riding the front of a wave, one you may not even see. Start ups are a cut throat area of the industry with 90% failing with nothing to show for it.

Again I may go to that again, but I would like a fall back fund before I do. 18 months ago was a scary time when I realized the company was going down the tubes (they were trying to hide it from me and the 6 other programmers on my team) and I had two months to find a job before this place went under.

Also starting a business needs capital unless you want to put yourself in debt out of the gate. I saw what happened to the guys who began the start up, last I heard he moved back in with his family up in Oregon. He may be back on his feet now, but I don't know.

Basically involves testing welds/tanks/boilers/pipelines at oil refineries, offshore rigs, nuclear sites, Bridges, hulls on boats, steel factories, loads of things.

You use Ultraonics, Radiography, magnetic particle and a few other things to test for defects in materials.

I really have no idea why it's paid so much, but it draws a lot of different people into it.

I think this country has been allergic to real jobs for some time. Welders, a very high paying job, have positions open for over $150,000 with minimal training yet most people would rather work at a customer service job making cold calls for $19,000 a year and living on food stamps.

Even blacks don't take these jobs, you think they would since cash money means everything to them. Then you have bernouts wanting college for everybody saying it is a necessity to escape poverty. Give me a high school student, no matter what race, 18 years old and I can give him a job drilling oil in ND for 120 grand minimum.

By all means capitalize on all the old timers retiring and leaving their high-paying positions, but know in about five years the companies will find someone less qualified to do them and for less pay.

That's not to mention in the coming decades those jobs will be easy enough to do by anyone with the way that technology is progressing.

You can make lots of money doing what you're doing. However, money is only one factor. A lawyer may make only $100,000, but what does he have that a journeyman iron worker doesn't have and never will have? Social status. Lawyers are far more respected.

My parents are first generation immigrants, until highschool we had three families sharing a 3 bedroom townhouse. I didn't have a room until college, me and my cousins slept on matresses in the living room.

My parents taught me almost nothing about growing up in the west, had very bad social skills, and so did I until college when I moved out. They paid my tuition, which is awesome, but Canada offers 30% off tuition for all students and no interest on loans for a year.

For a finance degree that's only about 20k for 4 years, plus 15k rent

Fucking love this shit. I want to collect degrees.
>>
>>73319542
It used to be that you went to university because your parents had money, or you wanted to go into academia, or you wanted to do real fundamental theoretical research.
Then the whole proletariat got in their heads that they deserve to go to university too. And the government set up loans to give them that chance.
Then they made movies about all the partying n shit, and now everyone just expects to be able to go there, even though they can't afford it.
This extends to other areas of life as well.
Expectancy of kids is entirely unrealistic. They expect that they will have the nicest shoes, the latest game console, a car for their birthday.
Television has normalized it, and parents cater to it by spending above their means.
Then they go to uni with no real plan for the future (i.e. how will this degree help me).
They just assume that degree = money. And they can't pay that shit back.

If you look hard enough you can find unskilled or technical jobs making decent money, that's my point. You don't have to work a Mickey D's or in a stuffy office. There are options. People have this idea that blue collar work is low paying. If it paid the same as doing paperwork no one in there right mind would bust their ass outdoors.

Trades pay very well as long as you get consistent work. With the exception of a few 'recession proof trades' it's very dependent on the economy. When economies nosedive production goes to shit.

Most people in their earlier 20s were not working during the last recession. It's the same thing as the 90s when everyone was making
bank. We are in this highest economic upswing since the 90s, everybody with a brain is making good money.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Middle management and those lower on the seniority chain are the first to go.

Because you can't be an ironworker the rest of your life. When you're 65 and it feels like you're being stabbed in the knees when you bend over and when your fingers are stiff as boards and you're blind as a bat, you'll have to retire. Someone who went to University can have a cushy job working indoors with air-conditioning and not have to move around and can do that as long as they please.
The goal of life is that as you get older, you work easier for less hours for more money.

Eat lunch at the same time with the same fucking grumpy people. I quit. Job I have now is amazing, basically by myself for 3 days running a business, only interact with delivery people 4-5 times a day for 1 minute. I pretty much work out, read, study, watch movies, take naps, and hang out with dogs. I have great benefits and 3.5 days off a week. The thing is he was making money for 4 years while you got into debt (unless mommy and daddy payed) or just broke even.

If he had any brains hed live at home for 5 years and save money like crazy. You could easily save 35000 a year like that. You got 175000 cash money at the age of 23 if you go right out of HS. Down payment on a house or outright buy one depending where you live. Rent the fuck out of it/flip it whatever. Make more dosh, buy more property. By the age of 30 you can retire from welding with 2-3 homes payed for/paying themselves off. Find a partime to bring in side dosh and you are set.

If you are with your money you could easily end up with a million in assets by 40-45.

The problem with many STEM students is they usually get into debt to pay for school, get a whatever entry job for 3 years before they start making more money than Joe Plumber. Too many buy nice cars and whatever, now they got maybe 20k left of school debt with 20k car loan, by 30 they might have shit payee off but now you are usually paying a mortgage. You might catch up to Willy Welders 30-35year real networth by Maybe the age of 45.

I've seen it all too often that some kid who decided to work a blue collar or trade right out of HS having much more net worth than to engineer making 150k after 10 years (not including school), both the same age.

It is what it is and if I could do it over I would have gone and done electrical at 18. I'd be fucking laughing right now, trades here in Ontario are making stupid money, and it's only going up.

agreed. I entered the Electricians Apprenticeship program that was for a union. From day 1 I was disappointed. carpenter, iron worker, HVAC, plumber, pipe fitter, welder, electrician, etc..

There will always be a need for someone to wire up a building, install pipes, weld steel together, or finally build a huge portion of an overpass freeway (iron worker & carpenter)

For all you memelords saying y'alls dad or whatever makes 30 dollars.
I am an actually J card carrying electrian. I started out at 13.00 an hour. The IEC is a national trade school that sets wages based on how many years you are in school, every semester it goes up to a standard wage.
Not every electrical company is in the IEC, it's a membership type deal but a good majority are.
I've been in the trade since high school, so about 10 years now.
I'm making about 40$ an hour, when I do scale pay jobs I make about 80$

I had a nurse gf for a year while she was in her final year, once she started working I couldn't handle her shift rotation

I make just over £42,000 a year as a carpet fitter. I got an apprenticeship after I dropped out of uni. With hindsight I'm so glad I didn't finish the course, would probably be working at starbucks now. Unless you're doing a "proper degree" like maths, university is a complete waste of time.

I too am a 18 fag and am about to graduate. Full ride is not an option for me. Im looking for a trade or career to get into where in 5-8 years I can master and start my own business. Any recommendations /pol/?

Most cities are open sewers of degeneracy, I agree, but if you find the right place, your chances of finding a good woman skyrockets.

You should be more worried about the fuck ups that beat that white guy in SF. I know they weren't SFPD but the liberals and blacks don't give a shit where they come from, all they see is a badge. You'll probably be down to mace and your maglights in 10 years.

Are you basing that on apprentice wages or your area just pays like shit? Apprentices are suppose to make at least 40% of what a journeyman makes while training for 4-5 years. Most union trades (you're rarely going to find any non-unionized anymore) in the bay pay apprentices at least $16-$18/hr. If a journeyman is making that low of a wage, they either suck shit, getting fucked over by their company, or need to move the fuck out of there.
If you want to work on an assembly line, see if any Tesla factories are near you. They're going to start production at the end of the year hopefully.
