i live in California and see jets every 5 minutes with a trail that is gone after 30 seconds but every couple hours there will be a jet flying in an uncommon flight path and it leaves a trail in the sky for HOURS.... not joking.
after about an hour its 10 times as wide.
they spray horizontal to the sun sometimes and after about an hour the sun passes through the spray trail and it looks like MIST! rainbow colors NOT clouds. spreads evenly and makes the sun hazy as fuck and i have seen jets literally STOP spraying........ then an hour later you have a fucking fat trail that starts and stops in random points of the sky and spread out and last almost all day.

The rainbow colours are... wait for it, this is amazing... rainbows. Little ones. Because the condensation trails (OK, "chem" trails if you must) are really small compared to clouds and the colours are confined to just the area where the trail is.

In case of emergencies. If a plane has to land on a runway that's quite short they need to be able to lower their mass as much as possible so they stop before rolling off the end at high speed. So fuel dumping is always possible as a contingency.
