Liberals are rather simple minded; their idealogy an be summarised in just two words:
Anti-Western
Anything that does not conform to Western values is good in their eyes.
The West for the longest time believed that marriage was between a man and a woman, therefore Gay = Good
The West for the longest time was Christian, therefore Islam = Good
It does NOT matter to a liberal that these two things are fundamentally incompatible, as long as they bring down the West. It's the same reason so many of them identify as "Anarcho-communist", it's so ridiculous only a leftist could come up with this.
Now, as to WHY they think like that, I can't tell you. I think it's a combination of:
1. Not having faced any real thread for générations that western culture has become disconected with reality and becomes short-sighted, you see this in the West's response to the regugee crisis

A general study of Muslim intellectuals shows that they have extremely divergent views on many subjects based on interpretation of law, geography, how they want to live in the world, etc. To hate the worldwide population based on one interpretation of Islam is lazy and shamefully ignorant. There are many Muslims who deserve defending and protecting.
I think liberals tend to oversimplify their positions just as much as conservatives, but want to be seen as compassionate so they can berate others for being hateful. Conservatives love to say "I told you so" when terrorists bomb somebody yet play football with their Muslim neighbor on the weekend.
Instead of excluding all Muslims from our society, we should just hate the ones who are attacking or otherwise trying to subvert our ideology. It's important to direct our violence where it is needed most.
