I was a light infantryman for years. 10th mountain division in upstate NY. The Army would send Armored Divisions up to train against us, and we would get to be the opposing forces.
Withough fail, we absolutely wrecked them. We would do guerrilla style ops, moving through the woods, hitting their supply lines, wreaking havoc. We loved hitting them at night when they were all hunkered down out of their vehicles. Command made us stop doing that because it was deemed as unfair and they weren't getting enough sleep to operate the vehicles safely.
One time me and 3 of my guys captured an unguarded supply convoy coming down a road at night with 2 humvees. Captured all their food and water for the next 3 days, along with their Executive officer (2nd in command). The Ober sever with us (basically the referee), made us let them go as it would have effectively ended the op.
Now, if they caught us on the road in a vehicle? We got smoked. Hard. But that's the thing, they usually didn't. My point is, I learned those tanks are very vulnerable, especially when not in a desert environment. Certainly not unstoppable, and the crews were largely unimpressive, sorry to say. If you caught theme out of the tank, it was game over for them.

31B reservist here. One of our main missions is defending MSRs. You wouldn't believe the amount of shit that has to get moved from point A to point B in order to keep armored units operational. Their demand for fuel alone is enough to keep a division-sized transportation unit running around like their hair's on fire. Our ability to protect convoys is very, very limited, and we're lucky the Taliban uses IEDs alone so often, instead of launching coordinated ambushes. Those tanks would be out of fuel in a week or less if they were operating against the civilian population of the US. Not to mention the fact that I and many others in the Guard and Reserves would desert and join the revolutionaries rather than murder our neighbors.

Yeah bro. I'm on my phone (stuck in hospital, sigh), but our bread and butter was Army Field Manual 7-8 (Infantry Bible). You can Google 7-8 and find free pdf's, but I found it for free on GlobalSecurity.org.
Also, the Army has numerous other field guides for different things, I'm sure you could find these free online. They range from no duh to freaking outstanding.
I have somewhere the Special Forces (Green Beret) Field Manual, but I don't know that one like I know 7-8 for basic infantry. As I recall, it had quite a bit about guerilla ops, and I'm sure Google could help.
Long and short is, most of it was common sense, tbqfh, and as long as you could sneak and be patient, it's easy to watch large units with large, loud vehicles get sloppy, complacent, and just generally present targets of opportunity.
But like others have said in this thread, much of the military would probably join the populace, depending on the situation, so that's good news.

Because the bulk of our military, police, and the people that protect our politicians and elites tend* to exemplify American values/morals.
It's one thing for the government to walk all over America when all we do is bitch and moan about the shit system and corruption.
It's another thing to actually try to set those who protect us against a significant rebellion/armed revolt.
If it went that far, there would be dissent within the ranks.
The very people who protect the people who would make the decision to use our military against our citizens would be in danger from their own security.
Personally, when I served, if I had been given the order to attack my fellow Americans who were in revolt, I'd have tried to kill the highest person up my chain of command who had passed that order (that I had the ability to reach).

Additionally, you underestimate the hassle of dealing with an armed and determined guerilla force. That's why ground operations in the middle east are out of style, hundreds of thousands of soviet firearms and explosives along with fanatic resistance hidden among the regular population.
Attack helicopters and drones are preferred even though they accomplish nothing, because they are more politically viable on the homefront.

I was 3rd infantry, schofield, HI. We did a 30 day exercise in NTC. Ended up getting called in short of the 30 days because Bradley and tank drivers kept running over their own people. We slept on Rocky slopes so we didn't get flattened in the night (not like that would happen with watch, but no reason to die in training)
