The most likely scenario is that it NEVER happened. What did happen was that the Nazis knew the Jews could not be trusted and would do whatever it took to undermine the nation. So, they isolated them and interned them in camps, much like the Americans did with the Japanese. While in thes camps many died due to disease, typhus was prevalent and lice borne diseases were major killers. In fact Zyklon B was used to kill lice to protect against disease.
Remember the Germans were fighting a war on two fronts so it makes sense that they needed every available pair of hands for war work and if these hands were Jewish, so be it. It was for this reason that camps like Auschwitz were created to provide labour for the war machine, Monowitz for example.
Now, if you need labour to make armaments, rubber, chemicals and weapons then why would you simultaneously kill people who could supply this labour? Makes no sense.
