I play $530 a month for my room, which is admittedly a good deal for this town. I pay $120 a month in car insurance and mandatory health insurance (thanks Obama) and $70 for my cell service, and I lose about 20% overall in income tax.

Nah it's not a myth. An average is a dumb way to look at the wages across an entire company but, as an average, it's actually about right.
You start at $13 and get regular raises every 6-8 months or so depending on how many hours you work. You "top out" at ~$24-26/hr depending on the position. In my case I'll "top out" after about 6,800hrs of work...or a bit short of 4 years in the company. That's why the "average" is about ~$20. Lots of people are earning the top and lots earn the lower wage because they just got hired etc.
