The rank and file progressives honestly believe the past shouldn't matter. It's just a story to them, and they have stories they like better than reality.
The leaders encourage this, because while rewriting history can't change the past, it can make it impossible to predict causes and effects. This is very useful to people that want to make other people do things that are directly contrary to their continued survival.
