A LOT depends on where you lived during the late 80's/early 90's.
If you lived in a relatively decent area, then it was utter god-tier.

I think the 80s were a confluence of various factors: a homogeneous population (US was 80% non-hispanic white, today it's 64%), the lack of shitty trade deals like NAFTA, a solid middle class, the existence of the Soviet Union as a clearly defined enemy and worthy rival, mass media uniting the country, and the lack of smartphones and to a lesser extent the internet. I was born in '96 so maybe I'm way off on most of these but the smartphone meme is real. Phones got big around 6th grade and by 8th grade everyone except me seemed to have one. In high school during lunch I'd sit with my friends and most of the times the time they'd be tapping away on their smartphones, on Reddit or playing Clash of Clans. There were a fair few who weren't on their phones but only a couple years later just about every person my age or below has one and is on it constantly in public. Shit, I spend most of my free time on my computer so it's not like I'm much better.
Today the nation is diverse, polarized, plagued by economic problems and the media is shilling hard against the rapidly dwindling white majority. Not only that but even if we fix that, all of it, automation will basically wipe out lots of low-wage jobs. I remember 9/11, it was one of my earliest memories. I certainly feel it contributed to a sort of malaise the past 15 years. There's no "other" like the Soviet Union to attack anymore, so today's kids fight against shit like "the patriarchy" and "cisheteronormativity". I honestly think "Post 9/11 America" will be an identifiable period of history in 50 years or so. Question is, will it be just a dip followed by a Komnenian restoration? Or the beginning of a long slide down?
If you're optimistic you'll note the 60s and 70s were followed by the 80s and 90s. If you're pessimistic you'll note the campus radicals of the 60s and 70s are the leaders today and the youth is worse.
