During the Argentian crisis Gold was used for larger purchases and silver for more daily purchases..

>once again it depends

it doesn't depend.

A money must be:
1) A medium of exchange
2) A unit of account
3) A store of value

Gold and silver fulfill or potentially fulfill these functions. In fact, they both serve as a better store of value than modern currency.

A solid bar of gold is extremely liquid. You could exchange a bar of gold worldwide for its market price in currency with little to no delay.

Except for the fact that there are many things that are better to have than gold in such a scenario, like, I dunno, guns and fucking ammo. Want food? Shoot it or use bullets to barter for it. Guns are a superior apocalyptic investment, along with medicine, a greenhouse, an off-the-grid power system, and a well.

>>
>>81427611
>Huuuurrrrrr that paper you say has value is worthless!
>Here, use this shiny rock instead!

Money is an inherently fictitious concept based on substituting a token of value in place of physical trade goods to expedite an exchange between parties. It's literally just a shortcut we made up thousands of years ago because direct bartering was too slow. What you use to represent value is largely irrelevant.

Now, is gold better than paper money for that purpose? Not really, because of its relative rarity. In order for us to switch back to a gold standard, each piece of gold would have to be valued exponentially more than it currently is worth to the point of absurdity. Would you want to live in a system where stealing your grandpa's gold fillings made you worth more than the economy of a 3rd world country?

It hasn't, because it's always been part of an economy.

>>
>>81439931

Yeah I don't get it.

People seem to prepare for a nuclear holocaust or some sort of zombie apocalypse.

The most likely happening is a natural disaster.

Or an orderly collapse of the financial system, in which case gold will be very valuable.
>>
>>81427611
Like all things its value is determined by humans. That means in SHTF scenario you can't count on it actually being worth anything. Shelter, food, alcohol, drugs, medical supplies and means to force other people to do your bidding is worth anything.
>>
>>81428213
>can never buy physical gold a spot price
>can never sell gold at spot price
If you intend to invest in gold for money making then you better buy paper gold. The exchange rate for physical gold is rather steep.
>>
>>81440586
>Or an orderly collapse of the financial system, in which case gold will be very valuable.
To whom? This might surprise you, but most people don't own or keep gold. Ergo, there will probably be some other system worked out instead of gold being used. Unless some Robin Hood fellow breaks into the Wall St vault and Fort Knox to distribute it to enough people that we start using it as physical money.
>>
>>81427611
You know what money is?
Food.
All value is ultimately derived from the fact that you can purchase food or something that will get you food with it.
>>
>>81440976
The amount of gold on paper exceeds the amount of physical gold ever mined by a factor of 12
>>
>>81428107
No.

Ammunition:
Corrodes
Comes in different calibers for different guns that a buyer doesn't necessarily have
Requires buyers to have a gun to make use of it
Is consumed
Can be damaged
Can be sold damaged, with poor or even no powder

Gold:
Doesn't corrode
Isn't consumed
Can be used by anyone
Cannot easily be destroyed

Ammunition is not and never will be a currency. Ever. Period.
At best it is a good you can barter with, like any other non-currency.

A more viable actual currency of the future could be electricity. If you had some sort of long-lasting (at least hundreds of years) solid state, high capacity storage system. Oil/Coal are basically this in chemical form. Although it does suffer from something gold/silver don't - it's consumed.
>>
>>81440989

I'm not talking about using it as physical currency (although we could).

But it could start backing cash once again.

It always will be part of the economy. The same conditions that made gold so valuable before will return. No matter how many guns and ammo and bottled water and cans of vegemite you have at some point having PM's will be practical because of the incredible purchasing power they will have.

Except it was always part of the economy because people could get it. Most of the time they bartered.

It'll only have the purchasing power the seller decides it has. Like it did in all barter economies.
