Pistols: Do what tom cruise's character told his wife to do in Mission Impossible 3... point and shoot, stay low to the ground
Fights in general: Do not hesitate. Just do shit. Leave your morality at the bathroom, you can vomit over what you did later.
Living in general: Stay unseen. Avoid main thouroughfares but also avoid bad parts of town. More people you get seen by, the more guns you may get seen by.
Get Guns: For pistols you want 9mm, get heavy subsonic ammo if you can because it blows through things. For rifle you have to choose based on what you can spend but please try to avoid the .22 caliber trap, the bullets are cheap but it jams every 10th shot no matter what you use. And it takes 5 shots to put down a crazed man unless you're james bond with accuracy.

For Ammo: You need to stock alot of it, you need 5000 rounds saved up that you do not use. And you need 10 magazines for each weapon. This is the hidden cost of firearms that isnt known till you go shooting alot.
Shotguns: Dont get it unless you have no other choice, the gun may be cheap (200-300) but you cant carry many shots. It may put someone down with 1 shot but so will any .308 and so will a 44 magnum revolver. But the shotgun is slower, harder to reload, and doesnt have many shots unless you've got a very expensive model.
Seriously a Lever Action 357 magnum is better than a shotgun and it suffers all the same problems. But at least the ammo is easier to carry.
Best rifle is probably a Semi Automatic .308 caliber gun, they usually have a 20 round magazine. This is the king of rifles. It will shoot through police body armor.
And The Police: In a civil war or apocalypse situation they turn into a well armed gang who wants women's pussy badly.
You cant count on them, and you should have something that can kill them. And remember they're trained and have alot of guns and ammo stocked.

If you manage to fall into the trap of getting a Sporting Rifle (what people seem to call an assault rifle these days)...
You need to focus on Ammunition more than the type of model. There are two guns worth a shit in this field that are affordable at about $600-700:
AR-15
AK-74 russian thing that looks like an AK-47
You need to get "M855 Ball" ammunition for the AR-15. Dont get anything else for your saved back stock.
Same deal for the AK-74... you need to get "7N6" ammunition for it, dont get anything else for the shit hitting the fan. People still have it for sale even if its not being imported anymore.
This stuff is what they used to kill those cops down in dallas. It will work just as well after the shit starts flying.

You should figure out how to build a Silencer for your pistols from plumbing parts. There are videos on youtube about it, particularly one that looks like it was made in the 80s.
Thats dangerous to do but you can probably make it, make sure it works for a few shots, then take it apart and keep the pieces separate until the shit hits the fan.

And Silencers only effectively work well with subsonic ammo. That means lower than 1100fps. So that dictates what kinda gun you would bother to make oen for.
