I graduate from university in less than 2 years. I plan on joining the Navy and becoming an officer through OCS. Why not? I was a mechanic in the Navy, not an office job but not exciting. My father was a radio operator in the Marines. Won't talk anything about it, just talked me out of joining the Marines even though he has his little shrine to it. I can tell he was very proud of it, but he still doesn't brag or talk about it. The only thing was he didn't want me to do it, and he told me "war isn't romantic".

If you are enlisting, prepare to clean toilets for the first year before you actually do your job. Someone's got to do it, and there isn't a designated job that cleans toilets. So you are going to get to your first ship fresh out of bootcamp thinking you are going to be some sort of highly advanced equipment operator, and they are going to have you highly advance clean up shit.
After that, then you'll be trained to do you job again, even though before you got to your ship you went through school to do your job. But you're an idiot, everyone thinks of you as a soft idiot, so you'll be talked down to. Then you get to do bitch work while everyone else sits around laughing at you.
After the first year it's not too bad. Just remember, there's guys in there that have been in there for a longer time. They're going to shit on you because you're newer.

I think their will be some major non nuclear wars in the further, on the officer/conscription note the choice is whether you feel comftable leading 30 men into battle, obviously you'll be listening to your sergeant, but it's also your responsibility if your men die, conscription will put you through the paces but you'll have much more experience of the battlefield when you get your promotions lad.

I'd like to join the Navy as an officer. Probably reserves. I've got my degree and am wealthy enough to not work. A Marine Corps infantry veteran friend of mine who served at Fallujah, as well as a cool Naval cryptologist friend, think I'd do well.
