THE SITUATION SO FAR
Erdogan was set to purge the military today, military pulled a coup with little time to prepare.

The focus was on the capital Ankara, secondary forces sent to Istan Constantinople. The coup in Ankara seems to have been successful, the one in Constantinople less so.

The secondary forces seem to have been to a large extent conscripts and privates told that this was a drill and many of them seem to have surrendered.

Constantinople is an Erdogan mudslime stronghold which explains the large number of people on the streets there.

All the proof of the coup being defeated is about 8 or so video and photo sequences from Constantinople constantly put on loop. If the coup was really crushed there would have been lots and lots more footage and from all over Turkey. There isn't.

Still no details at all of military units clashing, meaning practically all units seem to be sympathetic to the coup even if not directly engaged. There are things suggesting both the air force and the navy joining in but the blackout makes things very hard to confirm.

Total media blackout of everything except Constantinople, including a shut down of internet and social media, strongly suggesting that this is the only place where things are going Erdogan's way. Because of this we don't know the situation in the capital or what is going on in the rest of Turkey (which is a pretty big place). For instance we have no clue about what's happening on military bases not in the direct vicinity of Istanbul or the capital. That we are not endlessly fed footage of commanders on these bases denouncing the coup pretty much proves that they at the very least are not under Erdogan control.

TL;DR: Until we see endless footage on loop from all over Turkey demonstrating how the coup is crushed the coup is still going on. If they could get it they would air it endlessly. They fact that they aren't means the real situation is very different from what they want you to believe.

From what I've read most of the ultra-secularists had already been removed from positions of power a few years ago and Erdogan had started to put Islamists in the important positions.

This was a last gasp attempt by what secularists remain in the army and they clearly had little to no planning. So much so it feels like a false flag due to how many incosistencies there are.

I think Chief Roach Erdogan has won, for now...
>>
>>81337828

That map is complete and utter bullshit. The coup was hastily put together and poorly planned. The military at large refused to join in and the parliament, police, intelligence services and media (even those sections of the media who dislike Erdogan) all sided with the government.

We're talking about a country with 640,000 active troops here. I'd be shocked if the coup-plotters managed to field more than 10,000 of them.

>>81341012
Gulen is an old political rival with Erdogan. He might've caused the coup under the pretence of secularism, which has been thus far the main cause behind all the coups in Turkey.

Though, all this is suspect and could be Erdogan is just cleaning house of any opposition, and is using the coup to get away with it.

Police, intelligence services and media are all separate from the military. I wouldn't expect them to pick sides. Not officially, at least.

And as far as the military goes, the rebels have support so far from the air force and the navy, both of which are pretty significant parts.

The only thing we know for sure is that at least Istanbul is Erdogan controlled.

>-have they arrested everyone who might jump in pro-coup

Probably, 3000+ soldiers have been arrested according to government sources, but we do know that at least 2 dozen colonel ranked and higher officers have been arrested, including a rear admiral.

There is no additional capacity for resistance against pro Erdogan forces, not anymore.

>-if so, how quickly does everything go to shit for US interests in Turkey

One of the Turkish ministers have said that the US is behind the coup, also power has been cut to Ircirlik airbase and no one is allowed in or out, all planes grounded. They have demanded Gulen be extradited from the US immediately. They are waiting for Obama to respond, and if he responds unfavorably, there might be additional problems for US interests. In the long run, I would imagine Erdogan to remove US influence in Turkey completely.

Basically, the government ordered all military units to stand down and return to their bases immediately in order to force army leaders into a choice between gambling on the coup working and playing it safe by sitting in the barracks.

Most generals chose to play it safe and the coup-plotters were left with a couple thousand men in the field trying to take a handful of strategic positions across an enormous country.

Erdogan then had his followers hit the streets en masse because he knew that the rebels were pitifully thin on the ground and would be overwhelmed by that much public opposition.

The rebels started surrendering as it became apparent how weak their position was, with the national intelligence service (MIT) and police outnumbering them too.

The ideal result here is civil war, of course. Next best would have been Erdogan getting arrested/shot, but that one was highly unlikely.

Everything points towards triggering a coup attempt where it'd be just bloody enough to motivate the masses, safe enough for him to posture and still look like he was at risk, and broad enough to let him mess with foreign powers and get some concessions to seem even more badass to the common Turk.

Having it backfire into long periods of violence/an actual rebel movement would reduce Syria and Turkey to an even larger swath of chaotic, factional hell that might well draw the US in like Syria got Russians.

you have to figure if you're a soldier, even if you're not a kemalist that

1. if erdogan's powerbase survives many of your comrades are going to be witch hunted to death for any perceived sympathies to secular elements
2. you may die
3. the military (which holds back the chaos of the middle east) may be gutted, which may result in your family being killed by lunatic jihadists

in this case, it may be wise to back the coup (if it is secular) and remove erdogan even if you aren't a hardline secular nationalist.

It might be, but I doubt that it is. If anything, the closest Erdogan got to having a hand in the coup was knowing that a coup was going to take place. But, make no mistake, he's definitely going to use this as an excuse to purge the military and parliament of any opposition.

That's the speculation. I'm actually willing to give that scenario the benefit of the doubt. The reason is, is that once the coup started everyone started screaming "it's over" about a half-hour into it. I watched live video for about another seven hour of gunfire being exchanged. Entire time people saying "it's over it's over".

Erdogan is a fucking madman. He's tossing around sticks of dynamite like they're toys. It's not the ethnic shit that's going to rip Turkey apart, it's that his position on religion is doomed to be eclipsed by actual hardcore Islamists. Nobody is a "moderate Islamist," it's an interim position on the way to full blown Khalifa.

This is a shitshow.

Erdogan wants people to think that it was the Gulenists who did the coup. And the evidence of Erdo trying to detain these people the last few days is evidence of this.

However Erdo is arresting secularists as well.

If the coup was by secularists, then I think more of the turkish public would support it, because that is part of their national identity.

If Erdogan points the finger at the Gulanists, where there is a plausible if not probable cases that they did it, then he will use the opportunity to purge the seculars as well.

It does not look good. And the call to Jihad by the Imams will definatly lead to much vigilante violence which we are already seeing in Gazi against the Alevis and Kurds

>>81351369
My guess is it was a coup by secularists, but for the first time in the history of Turkey, the secularists in high ranking military positions are actually out-numbered by loyal Islamic zealots, which is a situation that Attaturk specifically knew would cause Turkey to degrade into a Muslim caliphate, and his vision was one of a secular leadership in the military and government.

Secularism is going to be a null concept in Turkey within 5 years.
>>
>>81353051
I think Erdogan switches loyalties, to Russia or the US, depending on his ambitions. Allying with whoever threatens him most.
He will ultimately work will Russia, if anyone, over the US at this point probably. Unless the US is completely cucked by his demands.

I think that Gulen is likely a CIA asset, maybe not fully controlled, but Hillary and Abedin try to use him at least.

Secularists are the true patriotic turks.

If you look at the history of how Republic was founded, you will see that what Mustafa Kemal and his companions did was basically a military coup and Turkish people were not supporting it 100%. The whole thing with Gülen and AKP in general is just a counter-revolution to the military coup that we know as the founding of modern Turkey. I recommend reading Erik Jan Zürcher's The Unionist Factor: The Role of the Committee of Union and Progress in the Turkish National Movement 1905-1926 to get a better understanding how modern Turkey was founded, his other books on the modernization of Turkey are also good. What we are seeing right now is not the regressing of a society but the pains of a society which was given democracy when the people were not ready for it.
>>
>>81353465
Erdogan previously purged the military, fearing a coup such as this.
Given significant elements of the military refused to go along with the coup, including its head, it seems he was successful in heading off his deposition.

In my opinion, liberals and "tolerant" people generally confuse Islam with other religions. Islam was effectively created to wage war and conquer. That he has changed his orientation based upon who threatens him more. His is an egomaniac. In this case the US and possible US backed assets could be conveniently removed, and so he has pivoted to russia.

When it looked like he could provoke russia and use the US, he shot down the plane and tried to mess around in Syria to gain influence. Russia responded with strength and so he has to make peace with him, then using this peace to fuck american assets in his country.
