It's more than that, yeah hes a running joke for sure but in an interview with the devs they said that for them Ghandi has become the civ mascot in a way, that the civ Ghandi and real life Ghandi are two very different entities and that civ Ghandi has taken on a life of his own .
And ya they aren't going for obvious choices ,. Civ V had pretty much all the really obvious choices that represented the glory of what ever nation but this time they said that with the new agenda system and enhanced AI, having a very well rounded set of different and unique personalities was most important, that are also all interesting to interact with. Fact is Ramses, Elizabeth and Alexander are all not exactly masters of tact and political aptness that also stand alone in their own unique abilities and view point , it would be a lot harder to try and work out exactly their unique agendas. Anyway I like it, it feels less like youre in the arena with a ton of giants but a bunch of scrappers, like Cleopatra, having to make really brash and bold and chancy decisions to play the world and hopefully come out on top

overall I'm pretty excited by everything I'm hearing. The art style took some getting used to, but as more and more screens and vids were released I'm really liking it now, though I'm still a little iffy on the way farms look.
I'm really excited about the unstacked cities. The way they sprawl looks really great and I think it'll make for some great gameplay. The wonders especially look great, just look at that Colossus >>81278871
I also really like the way civs seem to be more distinct. I'm hoping for ethnic diversity, or at least some variations in style for common units based on culture.

I still think the art direction is shite - a lot of it is like, Civilization Worlds tier, and there's way too much saturation. But it does look good in motion... this is one of those game where you really should just avoid screenshots. Someone needs to get on a graphical overhaul mod ASAP.
I like their alleged general philosophy of removing automation -- even though exploration will be automatable in the end -- and shit like districts too. Gameplay-wise it sounds like you'll have to be a little more involved in your civ's cities and plan well. Same goes for research. I have high hopes that they're going to make a lot of the boring auto-pilot aspects of the game into something a bit more fun.

There are definitely aspects of it I don't like. The farms, like I said, but also I think the landscapes just need more detail, and the proportions seem off. It definitely does look better in motion as opposed to screens, but I guess we'll see how it plays when it comes out. I'm thinking that a lot of my skepticism with the style will be easily addressed by mods, and quickly so.

I also like this. Overall it seems like everything is a lot more involved. I love the eureka system. It's such a simple thing, but it seems like it has the potential to be really powerful and add in a whole lot of fun.
